BM 2003-01-16 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting January 16, 2003 The Keep Coppell Beautiful Committee met on January 16, 2003 at 7pm in the Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center, 816 So. Coppell Rd, Coppell Texas. The following members were present; Julia Petty, Chair, John Valentine, Co-chair, Lisa Cunov, John Dobson, Judi Smith, and Rene Lawson. City of Coppell Liaison: Amanda Vanhoozier, Commumty Programs Coordinator. Not Present: Steven Smith. Item 1: Call to Order - Julia Petty called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm Item 2: Item 3: Consider approval of Minutes, November 21, 2003 Minutes approved as written. (6-0) Citizen's Forum. Pursuant to the State Open Meetings Law, the Committee is restricted in discussing or taking action on items not posted on the Agenda. Action on your statement can only be taken at future meetings. Steve Smith 103 Meadow Run Coppell, TX 75019 Spoke about the success of the For Ever Green program and the need for yard trimmings to go to a compost facility instead of taking up valuable space in the landfill. Marilyn Baken 419 GreenRidge Coppell, TX 75019 Spoke about the message we are giving to the children in Coppell and how recycling yard trimmings would be a positive message. Ellen Zeidler 118 Meadow Run Coppell, TX 75019 Spoke as a Master Composter that practices backyard composting and the benefits of recycling yard trimmings, which are 65% of the waste stream. Patty Hoffner 104 Landsdown Coppell, TX 75019 Spoke about extending the life of the landfill by recycling yard trimmings. Alison Smith 103 Meadow Run Coppell, TX 75019 Spoke about the benefits of using yard trimmings to make compost and also the benefits of compost in landscaping. Item 4: Item 5: Consider approval of revised objectives on the 02-03 Annual Work Plan-The Committee approved the annual work plan (6-0) Consider approval of KTB quilt square-Lisa presented quilt square that was appliqued by a senior at the Coppell Senior Center with KCB monogrammed letters. Approved (6-0) Item 6: Discussion of Residential Yard Trimmings- The Committee discussed the cost, the expected services, the Waste Management proposal, the impact on regular service, the city process to pass new ordinance, other options for recycling residential yard trimmings, and more education on the Don't Bag it Program. The Committee formed a sub-committee (Lisa, John V., and Rene) to research and report back next meeting. Item 7: Discussion of Adopt-a-Location Program's Effectiveness- The Committee discussed the mailing of the 2003 agreements for renewal. The deadline is February 15th to renew. They also discussed contacting the businesses to adopt locations that are high priority. The Committee made a motion to sign up as an Adopt a Location group and clean Beltline Road from Denton Tap to Moore Rd. The motion was approved. (6-0) Item 8: Discussion of Arbor Day Poster Workshop -One hundred Red Oak tree seedlings will be given to the fifth graders that participate at the workshop. Item 9: Discussion of Clean Coppell Earthfest 2003- The committee discussed continuing a recycle bin at the drop-off, pre-registration and families can bring bags of collected litter and register after their pick-up, pizza lunch served by the City Council, and soliciting doorprizes. Item 10: Evaluation Report-For Ever Green Holiday Tree Recycling and Computer Recycling- Amanda reported that over 1200 trees were recycled., 27 tons of mulch was distributed to residents, and 4.2 Tons of computer equipment was collected. There will be another computer recycling collection at Clean Coppell. Item 11: New Business to be placed on next meeting's agenda- Yard Trimmings Recycling Subcommittee, Home based Yard Trimmings Recycling, Adopt a Location 2003 Status, Clean Coppell Responsibilities and Roles, Report on the Arbor Day Poster Contest, and Report on Mayor's Breakfast.
