Minutes of Meeting
December 16, 2004
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Committee met on December 16, 2004 at 7pm in the Conference Room at the
Coppell Service Center, 816 $o. Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present, John
Dobson, Chairman, Co-Chairman, Lisa Cunov, Karen Smith, Jane Filarowicz, Julie Basham, Deb Newton-Hair,
and City of Coppell Liaison: Amanda Vanhoozier, Community Programs Coordinator. Not Present: Sheila
Bester
Item 1: Call Meeting to Order -John Dobson called meeting to order at 7:04p.m.
Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes, November 18, 2004 Minutes. Approved (6-0)
Item 3: Citizen's Forum. No citizens present.
Item 4:
Discussion and consider approval of Educational Plans for Schools.
Amanda V. met with Linda Cook from CISD and discussed the Educational Plan. Teachers already
have science kits, Linda suggested adding 2 more kits and including them with the existing ones.
Amanda provided Linda with the Keep America Beautiful web site, which has all the Waste in Place
curriculum for children. Amanda will contact Coppell middle schools and introduce the Waste in Place
curriculum. The other school presentations, activities, and contests were described as part of the
Educational Plan. Julie B. motioned to approve the educational plan, Karen S. second. Motion carried
unanimously. (6-0)
Item 5:
Discussion of Holiday Parade Recap.
Committee members handed recycling bins and flyers promoting the curbside tree recycling.
Amanda placed the parade banners at the Andy Brown East and West to inform citizens there will
not be a holiday tree drop off. Everyone was thanked for their creative participation in the parade.
Item 6:
Discussion Adopt a Locations Programs
Renewal letters were mailed out to all existing AAL groups. Recruiting letters will be mailed January
17% follow up telephone calls will be made from January 19 through February 4% Next AAL clean
up for KCB is scheduled for January 15% Amanda posted the FAQ's on the city web site for easy
access to citizens. Karen will continue to work with committee members with information about
follow up contacts with businesses to recruit AAL.
Item 7:
Discussion of the Governor's Community Achievement Award Documentation
Amanda V. has been updating the database and collecting articles. Julie B. also has pictures to be
included.
Item 8:
Discussion of Yards Trimmings Recycling and Curbside Recycling Report.
Amanda showed the committee the report from Waste Management that shows the tonnage for the
recyclable. Deb informed the committee that she noticed that Waste Management is taking the recycling
as regular trash. Committee members discussed of possible ways to correct the re-occurring issue.
Karen S. suggested having the citizens place the trash and recycling away from each other and also
having a Waste Management representative to sit in at a meeting and discuss possible solutions. Lisa C.
suggested placing a sticker or flag on the recycling cans for easier view or separating recycling from trash
by across the drive location. John D. will write a letter to Waste Management to notify them of the
situation.
Item 9: Discussion of Computer Recycling.
Dallas Computer Parts will hold the Computer Recycling on January 8th from 9am to 11 p.m. at no
charge to the citizens. Amanda made signs to advertise and flyers to post at the Recreation Center
and Post Office. Information is in the newspapers and city web site.
Item 10: Community Program Report
Amanda reported that the Distinguished Service Citation award is the third place Affiliate Award of
KAB. Amanda shared some of the information from the KAB Conference. American Beverage
Association is putting billboards up about recycling through NCTCOG. Keep America Beautiful
had Honda to sponsor and is giving away a Hybrid; any volunteer can enter to win. KAB is
launching the cigarette litter program; Amanda handed over information to Lisa to preview. Coppell
Community Garden harvested and donated 12,000 pounds in 2004.
