Minutes of Meeting
February 17, 2005
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Committee met on February 17, 2005 at 7pm in the Conference Room at the
Coppell Service Center, 816 So. Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present,
John Dobson, Chairman, Sheila Bester, Co-Chairman, Lisa Cunov, Karen Smith, Jane Filarowicz, and City
of Coppell Liaison: Amanda Vanhoozier, Community Programs Coordinator. Not Present: Julie Basham,
Deb Newton-Hair
Item 1: Call Meeting to Order - John Dobson called meeting to order at 7:05p.m.
Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes, January 20, 2005 Minutes. Approved (5-0)
Item 3: Citizen's Forum. No citizens present.
Item 4:
Discussion and consider approval of recommendation to City Council to have a teen
representative on the KCB Committee.
As a Forty Asset initiative to involve youth in leadership, KCB discussed recommending to City
Council to include a teen rep on the committee. Members discussed of the appropriate age and ways
that the teen could be involved with Keep Coppell Beautiful. Jane Filarowicz motioned to approve
this recommendation to include a teen representative on the KCB Committee, Karen Smith second.
Motion carded unanimously. (5-0)
Item 5:
Discussion and consider approval of KAB Litter Index.
Committee members discussed the dates for the Litter Index and decided on March 12 at 8:00
a.m. Members are to meet at the Service Center and ride the van with Girl Scout group. Amanda
will call the Girls Scout Leader. Lisa Cunov motioned to approve the date and time mentioned
above for the Litter Index, Jane Filarowicz second. Motion carried unanimously. (5-0)
Item 6:
Discussion and Consider Approval of new Adopt a Location groups-renewals and recruits.
Amanda updated the committee with the names of the renewed and 14 new groups. Committee
discussed what locations to place all the new groups. Sheila Bester suggested to have the
Chamber of Commerce give out an AAL information package to the new Companies that
registered with them. Karen Smith suggested asking a representative from the Chamber to sit in a
KCB meeting and provide them information regarding AAL. Karen Smith would like to rotate
the responsibility of organizing the KCB AAL clean ups. Jane Filarowicz volunteered to
organize the March clean up. Sheila Bester motioned to accept all renewals and new AAL groups
and their proposed clean up locations, Karen Smith second. Motion carried unanimously. (5-0)
Item 7:
Discussion of Educational Plan-Curriculum Kits.
Julie Basham and Deb Newton-Hair were not present to give committee information. Amanda
delivered trees to schools; the others will stay in the Parks & Rec. Dept. and used to start a tree
farm. Lisa Cunov will deliver grocery sacks to the schools for the children to decorate. Arbor
Day posters are on the website to be judged; members can log in and vote.
Item 8:
Discussion of Clean Coppell Earthfest.
Clean Coppell is April 2nd from 9a.m. -12 a.m. Pre-registration packages will be emailed next
week. Ads will be place on the newspaper to recruit volunteers. Information will also be posted
on the website.
Item 9:
Discussion of Recycling in Coppell-Yard Trimmings Recycling.
Brad Reid mailed a letter to an upper management representative from Waste Management and did
not receive a response. Amanda made follow up telephone calls and met with Mike Holbrook,
Operation Manager, and driver supervisor, Dale Young from Waste Management. Mike Holbrook
will make a presentation at the March KCB meeting. Waste Management will start keeping track,
with a clicker, of the yard trimmings recycling participation. Yard Trimmings Recycling put out on
a non-recycling day will not be picked up. Trucks are also equipped with digital cameras to take
pictures of any incorrect recycling.
Item 10: Discussion of the Governor's Community Achievement Award Documentation.
Entries are due the first week of May. This year will be easier to organize the documentation
since pictures and articles are being scanned in advanced.
Item 11: Community Program Report.
Amanda reported that Joyce Whitbread resigned to her position as a Community Garden
Coordinator. The open position has been posted. Bob Timmerman has applied for the Farmers
Market Assistant. Deb Newton-Hair would like to apply for the position of Community Garden
Coordinator. The Farmers Market and CCG Boards will meet to discuss and approve the
positions. Deb Newton-Hair will attend Jr. Master Gardner Specialist training. 104 plots have
been adopted in the gardens for 2005.
Texas Smartscape Class is March 3rd and l0th
Mulch Day is March 12th
