BM 2006-09-21 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting September 21, 2006 The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on September 21, 2006, at 7:05 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center, 816 So. Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present: John Dobson, Chairman, Brent Wooten, Lisa Cunov, Joyce Whitbread, Cindy Geppert, Chris Reed, Carrie Stevenson, City Special Events Coordinator and Amanda Vanhoozier, City Liaison and Community Programs Supervisor. Item 1:Call Meeting to Order ? John Dobson called meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Item 2:Consider Approval of August 17, 2006, Minutes ? Brent Wooten moved to approve the minutes. ? Chris Reed seconded the motion. ? Motion carried 4-0. Item 3:Citizen’s Forum ? Mark Starr, 8119 Dogwood Lane, Irving, Texas, 75063, 972-556-1390, formally of Coppell, has had an AAL sight with the Cub Scouts for two years in Coppell. He spoke regarding his interest in encouraging schools and churches to participate in litter cleanups and sustainable landscapes in Coppell. Item 4:Discussion of AAL program ? Members reported that some groups have sent in their reports, the Exchange Club moved locations, and Real Estate Butler is new to program. Discussion of Recycling at the Ballfield Item 5: ? Amanda Vanhoozier reported that the response has been positive since putting the new recycle containers in Wagon Wheel and MacArthur Parks. Four bags were picked up minus cans, which will be picked up after Saturday, September 23. ? Amanda Vanhoozier reported that the Waste Management contract is up in 2010. KCB will form a sub-committee for citizen involvement in solid waste management. Item 6:Discussion of Promotion in Motion Project ? Amanda Vanhoozier said this is the second grant, the solid waste grant that starts October 1, 2006. ? The new KCB trailer will have graphics and be outfitted with equipment to set up a booth at special events. ? Item 7:Community Programs Report ? This Sunday, Harvest Celebration, 7 p.m., at the Wagon Wheel Falls. Please come as we honor all Community Program volunteers. ? Coppell Community Garden–The CCG Board is planning a board training with the Center for Non-Profit Management on October 8, 1:30-5:30 p.m., at the Council Chambers. KCB Board is invited to attend. The Share the Harvest program has donated 5,400 pounds to date to Metrocrest Social Services and Coppell Senior Center. Volunteers documented 3,125 hours to date. Educational programs this month were Herbs at Pecan Creek Nursery, Bloom’n Hot Tour, and Helping Hands meetings. ? Coppell Farmers Market—Vendor count has increased to 13 this month. Continue to have steady flow of customers. The CFM committee will be running the market until November 18, the will open December 9 and 16 for Holidays at the Coppell Farmers Market. The Fall Festival will be October 28 featuring the Chamber Business Expo and Old Town Days. ? Bloom’n Hot Tour—Seven home landscapes in Coppell featuring Texas SmartScapes were viewed by 120 participants. The classes held in September were attended by 18 participants. ? Rain Harvesting Class, September 23, 10:30-noon, Helping Hands Community Garden, 255 Parkway Blvd. ? Master Composters of Coppell—Two new MC certifications recognized by TCEQ. Master Composter Seminar, October 26-28. Register now at 972-462-5100. ? New KCB Board appointment at the September 26 Council meeting. Reception to be held at 6 p.m. RSVP to Amanda. ? Wild Flower Seeding—September 30. ? Fall Festival—October 31 at Coppell Aquatic and Recreation Center. ? Computer Recycling—November 11 at Town Center. ? Mulch Day—November 11 near Wagon Wheel Park. ? Holiday Parade and Celebration—December 2. ? Amanda Vanhoozier reported that KCB banners are up at four locations on Denton Tap and Sandy Lake Road. ? Keep Texas Beautiful 2006 Affiliate Survey Highlights. ? Coppell Community Gardens Corporation annual report: Coppell Community Gardens Corporation 2005-2006 Annual Report Sept. 21, 2006 CCGC Board ? Implemented recommended changes from Board Training Consultant to improve the effectiveness of the Board. ? Further integrated the Coppell Farmers Market Committee into the organization and Board. ? Planning seminar for the Board and potential Board Members to learn more about their fiduciary, legal, financial and liability responsibilities of a Board member. Coppell Community Gardens (CCG) ? Transitioned to garden self-management to reduce hours demanded of Garden Coordinator by increasing gardener involvement and responsibilities. ? Transitioned Garden Coordinator to a Garden Educator position to provide more reasonable hours for the paid position. ? Promoted garden volunteer opportunities through tours of the gardens and promotion booths at the Farmers Market, YMCA and Clean Coppell Earthfest. ? Donated poundage dropped 20% due to the early and prolonged summer heat on our tomatoes, late spring front damaging peaches and insect killing the squash, melon and cucumber plants. Because these plants producing heavy fruits, their loss pounds cannot be recaptured in lighter fruit producing plants. ? Volunteer hours donated by gardeners have increased this year. ? Weekly provided support to youth doing Community Service in the gardens. ? Fund raising through a plant sale and selling memberships. ? Continued as a Master Gardener Volunteer Project. Maintained an active organics recycling education site at both gardens. ? Coppell Farmers Market (CFM) ? Doubled the number of vendors compared to the previous year {by listening to their input and satisfying their needs.} ? Worked with the City of Coppell to increase electrical outlets, market surface, additional parking, and a vender driveway to street. ? Developed a seating area at market with shade, coffee, ice water, and fan on extreme heat days. ? Increased marketing with totes, shirts and aprons, giveaways, and consistent signage. ? Coordinated four celebrations in partnership with Old Coppell Businesses for the market season opening th day, last day, July 4, and Fall events. Planning with the Coppell Chamber of Commerce for their 2006 Expo. ? Partnered with CCG and CCE by providing booth space to promote community programs and education. Coppell Community Education (CCE) ? The number of contacts made through educational programs has increased this year. ? Provided garden education for the Senior’s Garden Club monthly meeting, including two field trips. {Weatherford Peach Festival and Botanical Garden Walk} ? Informed Mulch Day participants about the benefits of mulching with literature distribution. exercise ? Incorporated nutrition, and health topics into Junior Master Gardener program and supported an "Step up to Health. It all starts in the Parks." educational booth for Conducted our first Junior Master Gardener classes for 6-11 year olds over 3 weeks in ? partnership with the Aquatic and Recreation Center KIDZ Connect summer program. ? Supported the YMCA summer program for teens who made wildflower seed balls and volunteered time at the gardens, ? Promoted education, volunteering and membership opportunities through booths at the Farmers Market, Boy Scout Museum and churches YMCA, Clean Coppell Earthfest, . Made presentations on compost to other communities. ? Provided information on establishing and maintaining community gardens to CCA, Dallas and ? Tarrant Co. Master Gardeners, TAMU Agriculture Research Center, Plano Community Gardens and Richland Community College Horticulture Program. Coordinated our annual Coppell’s Bloom’n Hot Tour and participated in the ? Dallas Water Utilities Xeriscape Tour. Opened educational seminars and demonstrations to the public on canning food, coyotes, rain ? harvesting, composting, and Texas SmartScape®. New Business to be placed on next meeting agenda: ?
