BM 2008-05-15 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting May 15, 2008 The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on May 15, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center, 816 South Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present: Chairman Brent Wooten, Chris Reed, Carole Gayler, Tom Hudon, and Angie Huff. Student Advisors present: James Halpin and Geetika Rao. City Liaison Amanda Vanhoozier, Community Programs Supervisor, and Phyllis Shepherd, Parks and Recreation Secretary, were present. Item 1: Call Meeting to Order ? Brent Wooten called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. Item 2: Consider Approval of April 17, 2008, Minutes ? The KCB Mission is to involve The Mission Statement needs to be corrected to: individuals and businesses throughout the community to promote education and initiatives that encourage waste reduction, litter prevention, beautification, and environmental sustainability. ? Minutes approved with correction: 4-0 Item 3: Citizen’s Forum ? No citizens present Item 4: Discussion and Consider Approval of Letter to CISD Encouraging Recycling in the schools ? James Halpin revised the letter, and Amanda Vanhoozier will mail it out on Coppell letterhead. ? Letter approved, 5-0 Item 5: Discussion of KCB Criteria for Green Business Recognition ? Discussion tabled until next meeting in August. Item 6: Discussion of Computer Recycling Options ? Amanda Vanhoozier reported that many e cycling companies are beginning to charge fur to the amount of electronics collected. Other cities are looking at companies who charge the residents $0.15 per pound. One such company is in Garland, Erecycler, LLC, www.erecyclerllc.com. ? The board would like a company that grounds and pelletizes parts, destroys the hard drives, refurbishes the mechanisms for reuse and does not transport items to other countries or landfills. ? Another consideration discussed was the liability of volunteers loading and unloading the equipment. ? Angela Huff reported that CCA takes computers and TVs whether they work or not. ? Amanda Vanhoozier stated that the next e-cycling will be in November and she expects a large quantity of TVs in the January city e-cycling event due to the change to HD. Item 7: Update on Residential Solid Waste and Recycling ? Amanda Vanhoozier reported that the city council has requested Turco to prepare a survey for the citizens of Coppell to help determine what the citizens prefer. The survey results are expected at the end of June. Item 8: Community Programs Report ? TXDOT Landscape - The landscape location will change from Denton Tap and 121 to Royal Lane and 635 due to the tollway authority taking over. The architect will be drawing up a new draft for preview. ? Coppell Community Garden - On May 20, the CCG Board is awarding two scholarships to CHS seniors and will have a brunch at the gardens on May 31, 10:30am, Helping Hands Garden in honor of the scholarship recipients. 2008 Share the Harvest donated to date- over 1000 lbs. to Metrocrest Social Services food pantry. The gardeners are working on high production this year due to increase in clients. On May 17, the City of Plano Sustainability Volunteers will be touring the gardens and CFM. ? Coppell Farmers Market - The new parking lot and surface at the CFM is installed and makes the accessibility in and out of the market easier. The Customer Appreciation Day/ Grand Opening was successful with an estimate of over 1000 cars throughout the morning. ? Coppell Community Garden Education - The Educational calendar is available on the new website www.coppellcommunitygarden.org . The Rain Barrel Class was filled and reached citizens that have not participated in previous class/volunteer opportunities. ? Greenstorming Group at the Coppell Chamber of Commerce will be going on a field trip to AbitibiBowater Materials Recovery Center on June 6, 10:15am, leaving from the Chamber office in Old Town Coppell. KCB Board is invited to attend. ? KCB Board Meetings - Meetings in June and July are cancelled and the next meeting date is August 21, 2008. ?th July 4 Parade – KCB will participate in the parade with the truck and trailer. Amanda Vanhoozier will purchase fans to pass out. Meet at St. Ann’s Church parking lot at 9:15am. New Business to be placed on next meeting agenda: ?
