BM 2010-02-18 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting February 18, 2010 The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on January 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center, 816 South Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present: Craig Pritzlaff, Shannon Olmstead, David Caviness, Charles Dart, Samuel Duff, Brandi Todd, Carole Gaylor and Student Advisors Geetika Rao and Elizabeth Meyer. City Liaison Cristal Rollins, Community Programs Coordinator, and Phyllis Shepherd, Parks and Recreation Secretary, were present. Item 1: Call meeting to order  Craig Pritzlaff called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Item 2: Consider approval of January 21, 2009, minutes  Motion was made and carried approving the January 21, 2009, minutes. Item 3: Citizens’ Forum  Eesh Shetty Shorjoe Bhattacharye  9041 Jasmine Lane 9172 Beechwood Lane  Irving, TX 75063 Coppell, TX 75019  972-869-4572 469-258-9581  Both Coppell High School students with ECoppell Club reported on their initiative to encourage Coppell residents to use the free cloth bags they provide instead of plastic bags. They have given out 200 bags in front of Kroger Food Store and Coppell Ace Hardware Item 4: Presentation by Amanda Vanhoozier with the City of Coppell regarding city’s environmental initiatives  Amanda Vanhoozier, Community Program Supervisor, reported on EcoCoppell which started in 2007 and is a green initiative within City government. Coppell is the first certified EMS Texas municipality. The city has reduced fuel consumption by 11% and energy by 5%. The team meets monthly and is led by the deputy city manager, and all initiatives have been done within the city budget. Item 5: Report from subcommittee regarding review of environmental policies, ordinances and requirements  Charles Dart reported that the subcommittee met and discussed building codes, waste and other items. The subcommittee will meet again on Saturday, February27.  Cristal Rollins reviewed the Chamber of Commerce meeting she attended at which John Klaiber with Waste Management spoke about recycling. Item 6: Discussion of Recycle to Eradicate Poverty/PhoneRaiser  The board discussed the Recycle to Eradicate Poverty/PhoneRaiser and decided to recommend that Cristal Rollins promote the opportunity on the City website. Item 7: Discussion of Board’s Earthfest activities  Shannon Olmstead reviewed the activities of the board at Earthfest to be held on April 24 and reported that 230 volunteers have registered already for clean up.  Cristal Rollins reported that grant money was used to purchase 1000 water bottles with the KCB logo affixed. The board will give these bottles out to Earthfest attendees. Item 8: Discussion of grant opportunities and possible subcommittee for researching grant opportunities  Cristal Rollins stated that she does not think a subcommittee is necessary. Item 9: Discussion of Adopt-a-Location  Cristal Rollins reported that Better Built Contractors, M.D. Pediatrics, and Students Against Destructive Decisions are leaving the program. The Coppell High School Latin Club is interested in joining. Item 10: Discussion of Green Team program  Cristal Rollins reported that the Green Team now has 20 members. A mixer is being planned for the members and the group at the new senior center facility.  Craig Pritzlaff suggested that a yearly evaluation of the program is appropriate. Item 11: Youth Report  Elizabeth Meyer asked if Styrofoam recycling is available. It is not a viable option.  Geetika Rao asked about getting the tunnel at the Parkway Blvd. spillway cleaned up. Cristal Rollins will request the parks department to clean up the area.  Geetika Rao reported that the Sierra Club at the high school has had light sensors installed in the commons area and will have a Sustainable Expo on April 30 from 1-3 p.m. Item 12: Community Programs Report (written)  1. Recycling Carts – “Make Your Cart Count” goals – 65% Participation Rate (PR) and 20% Diversion Rate (DR). NOV. 09 DEC. 09 JAN. 10 16.75% DR 19.46% DR 21.08% DR 69% PR 68% PR 74% PR  2. Abitibi Diversion 2009 – 286 tons of paper diverted from landfill in 2009 through Abitibi bins in Coppell.  3. E-Cycling Collection – 16,155 pounds collected (approximately 200 people) at rd the January 23 collection.  4. Coppell Community Garden Education – had 30 attend first class of the year on January 16. Upcoming classes: Sunday, February 21(Plant Reproduction) and Sunday, February 28 (Roses) – both at 1:00 p.m. at Coppell Town Center.  5. Coppell Farmers Market – Winter Markets: Saturday, February 20; Saturday, March 20 – 8:00 a.m. to noon.  6. TXDOT Landscape Project – Freeport/635 project is close to completion.  7. Upcoming Events – Town Center Movie Series – March 19 (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), March 26(The Neverending Story), April 2 (Jurassic Park), April 9 (The Iron Giant). All movies begin at dark.
