Minutes of Meeting
January 21, 2010
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on January 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room at the
Coppell Service Center, 816 South Coppell Rd., Coppell, Texas. The following members were present:
Craig Pritzlaff,, Shannon Olmstead, David Caviness, Charles Dart, Samuel Duff, Brandi Todd, Carole Gaylor
and Student Advisors Geetika Rao and Elizabeth Meyer. City Liaison Cristal Rollins, Community Programs
Coordinator, and Phyllis Shepherd, Parks and Recreation Secretary, were present.
Item 1: Call meeting to order

Craig Pritzlaff called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Item 2: Consider approval of November 19, 2009, minutes
?
Motion was made and carried approving the November 19, 2009, minutes.
Item 3: Citizens’ Forum
?
No citizens present.
Item 4: Presentation by Jennifer Vuitel of North Central Texas Council of Governments
concerning regional waste management issues
?
Jennifer Vuitel, Environment and Development Planner II, North Central Texas
Council of Governments, presented information on solid waste grants, electronic
recycling and apparel recycling to alleviate landfills that are reaching near capacity.
Item 5: Presentation by Suzanne Sutton from Recycle to Eradicate Poverty
?
Suzanne Sutton, Program Director, with Phoneraiser, presented information on
collecting cell phones, PDAs and inkjet cartridges to generate financial contributions
for the Chiapas Project or a non-profit organization of choice.
Item 6: Discussion of possible subcommittee for analyzing and recommending changes to
waste management and environmental policy/ordinances

After discussion, the motion was made and carried to form a subcommittee which
will report back to the board at the next meeting.
?
Subcommittee members are Sam Duff, Shannon Olmstead and Chuck Dart.
?
Sam Duff will attend the February 5th meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.
Item 7: Discussion of grant opportunities and possible subcommittee for researching grant
opportunities
?
After discussion, the board decided to table this item until the next meeting in order
to gather ideas for a specific need.
Item 8: Discussion of Adopt-a-Location program (renewals and final 2009 statistics) and
approve Board’s 2010 cleanup dates
?
Cristal Rollins reported that several members have dropped out of the program and
others have until February 12 to renew.
?
KCB board will pick up litter on February 6 (8 am), April 17, July 17 and October 9.
Item 9: Discussion of Green Team program
?
Brandi Todd reported that the program includes 17 groups at this time. Brandi and
Laurie (Chamber of Commerce) will recruit more businesses.
?
Shannon Olmstead will extend an invitation to these green businesses to have booths
at Earthfest.
Item 10: Discussion of FreeCycle.org
?
Following discussion, Chuck Dart volunteered to contact the Lewisville freecycle.org
group with an invitation to participate at Earthfest in order to give Coppell citizens
information about this organization.
Item 11: Discussion of March meeting date and Litter Index Survey date in March
?
Due to spring break, the March meeting was moved to March 25, 2010.
?
The Litter Index Survey will be conducted on March 27, 2010.
Item 12: Community Programs Report (written)
?
1. Keep America Beautiful –
KCB has been named as a President’s Circle Award
Winner for 2009.
?
2. Recycling Carts –
“Make Your Cart Count” goals – 65% Participation Rate (PR)
and 20% Diversion Rate (DR).

3. E-Cycling Collection –
this Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to noon, Town Center. $7 for
monitors, $12 for TVs, other items free.

4. Coppell Community Garden
– grew and donated 14,432 pounds of produce in
2009. Surpasses last year’s total of 13,377 pounds. Gardeners volunteered 6,636
hours in 2009. They will start youth volunteer hours again on February 6.
?
5. Coppell Community Garden Education –
first class of 2010 – “Starting Plants
from Seed”, Saturday, January 16, 1:00 p.m., at the Library.
?
6. Coppell Farmers Market
– Winter Markets: Saturdays: January 16; February 20;
and March 20, 8:00 a.m. to noon.
?
7. TXDOT Landscape Project
– Freeport/635 project is close to completion.
?
8. Upcoming Events
– Sweetheart Ball – Friday, Feb. 5 (Moms & Sons) and
Saturday, Feb. 6 (Dads & Daughters) - 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. (both nights) at the CARC.
