LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES
January 12, 2012
The William T. Cozby Public Library Board met in regular session on Thursday, January 12, 2012
in the board room of the William T. Cozby Public Library.
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chair, Thomas Dwyer at
7:05 p.m. Other board members present were Patricia Nicks, Karla Tabor, Janet Koester,
Wednesday Foster, Saul Friedman, Stephen Charters, and John Boyd. Youth Advisors
Sai Panguluri and Shashwat Chaturvedi were also present. Staff in attendance were
Assistant Library Director Jane Darling and Senior Administrative Technician
Kim McGrath.
2. ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Thomas Dwyer gave a brief overview of the responsibilities
of each position and made a motion to nominate Patricia Nicks for Chair. All were in favor.
Thomas Dwyer made a motion to nominate Wednesday Foster for Vice Chair. All were in
favor. Patricia Nicks made a motion to nominate Saul Friedman for Secretary. Thomas
Dwyer seconded the motion. All were in favor, The new officers are as follows:
Chair — Patricia Nicks
Vice Chair ---- Wednesday Foster
Secretary — Saul Friedman
3. ATTENDANCE EXPECTIONS: Jane Darling briefed the Board on the City Council's
attendance expectations for Library Board members.
4. TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT: All Board members have completed this requirement.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE November 10, 2011 BOARD MEETING:
Thomas Dwyer moved to approve the minutes of November 10, 2011. Wednesday Foster
seconded the motion. All were in favor. Minutes were approved.
6. CITIZENS APPEARANCES: None
7. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
■ Workload Indicators: Patron visits were up by 8% and circulation increased by
12% in December. DVD usage was up by 5% while internet usage continues to
decline. WiFi usage increased also. Jane discussed plans to simplify the statistics
report for Board members. The new computer stations for young children are up and
running and receiving steady usage.
■ Programs: The new teen read program Between the Lines starts in March
with the book Hunger Games. Free books are available to teens at the library in
January and February. Also, Second Saturday Storytime begins January 141'x.
A Zumba class will be held on January 2 Pt
8. Library Board Meeting Dates: Thomas Dwyer moved that the Board not meet
in June, July or December. Karla Tabor seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
9. Board Reports for FY 11/12: The Library Board reports to City Council on the 2nd Tuesday
of June and the 2nd Tuesday of November.
10. Youth Advisor's Report: Patricia Nicks explained the Youth Advisor's Report to new
member, Shashwat Chaturvedi. Sai Panguluri cited the need for more study rooms and
for better outreach to the schools regarding programs for teens. Jane Darling suggested
that the youth advisors make inquiries into the rules governing outside announcements and
advertising at the high schools.
11. Discussion of FY11/12 Library Board Goals and Objectives: Thomas Dwyer went over
the goals from last year. Stephen Charters talked about the library expansion plan and
requested time at the next Board meeting to make a presentation regarding this subject.
Thomas Dwyer suggested keeping the first 2 goals from last year. Stephen Charters suggested
more community outreach and library sponsored events. The Board would like library staff
input and recommendations.
12. 5013(c) Foundation: The ongoing frustration with acquiring approval for the Foundation
was discussed. Saul Friedman suggested contacting Congressman Kenny Marchant for help in
this matter.
13. Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
