OR 58-16 Appointment of a Chief of Police 5816 AN ORDINANCE DISPENSING WITH THE OFFICE OF TOWN MARSHAL AND PROVIDING FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF A CHIEF OF POLICE TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE TOWN MARSHAL AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Coppell, Texas, have investigated into and have determined that it would be to,he benefit of the Town, and its inhabitants, to abolish the office of Town Marshal and provide for the appointment of a Chief of Police. THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF COPPELL, TEXAS: 1. That the office of Town Marshal be and the same is hereby dispensed with and abolishede 2. That there be and there is hereby created the office of Chief of Police, and such officer shall perform all the duties and shall be clothed with all of the powers of Town Marshal. 3. That the Chief of Police shall be appointed by the Mayor, with the approval of a 2/3rds majority vote of the Town Council, and shall hold office until the second Tuesday in April next succeeding his appointment, or until his successor has been appointed and qualified. 4. That the Chief of Police may be removed from office at any time for cause by a resolution adopted by a 2/3rds majority vote of all the Aldermen elected, provided that the Chief of Police may make application for a public hearing within ten (10) days aft. er the adoption of such resolution and such removal shall be held in abeyance until after a public hearing has been had. 5. That the salary of the Chief of Police shall be established by the Town Council and may be raised or lowered from time to time as may be determined expedient by the Town Council. 6. The present Town Marshal shall seeve as Chief of Police until his successor shall have been appointed and qualified. The fact that the provisions of this ordinance are needed immediate- ly creates an emergency and an imperative public necessity, demanding that the rules requiring ordinances robe passed at more than one separa.te meeting be suspended, and that this ordinance take effect immediately after its passage, and it is so ordained. Ordinance 58-16 was passed and approved by the Town Council of the Town of Coppell, Texas on June 10, 1958.
