LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES
June 13, 2013
The William T. Cozby Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session on Thursday, June
13, 2013 in the board room of the William T. Cozby Public Library.
1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chair Patricia Nicks at 7:05
p.m. Other board members present were Thomas Dwyer, Karla Tabor, Wednesday Foster, Janet
Koester, Stephen Charters and Adrienne Morton. Youth Advisors Trinity Sullivan and Shashwat
Chaturvedi were also present. Staff in attendance were Library Director, Vicki Chiavetta,
Assistant Director, Jane Darling and Sr. Administrative Technician, Kim McGrath.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE MAY 9, 2013 REGULAR BOARD
MEETING: Wednesday Foster moved to approve the minutes and Thomas Dwyer seconded the
motion. All were in favor and the minutes were approved.
3. CITIZENS APPEARANCES: Visitor was Maggie Lucas.
4. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
The Sales Tax Reauthorization Committee did a good job on their presentation at the
public forum on May 21St. They will meet next Tuesday, June 18 and then will go to Council
with their recommendation, date to be announced.
Workload Indicators: Checkout of DVD's is down while book checkouts are up.
Circulation has dropped overall most likely due to the non-resident fee the library
now charges. Ebooks, WiFi, etc. continue to increase.
Programs: The kick-off for Summer Reading Club was June 10th at the Aquatic
Center with a musical performance by the Que Pastas. Attendance for the event
totaled 140 people. The Star Wars/Free Comic Book Day drew 150 people and
CozbyCon had 220 in attendance. The Volunteer Fair which was promoted at several
city events had 245 people. Upcoming programs include Festival of Nations
(England) and a community art project on June 15th. Pat Nicks gave a report on the
Family Expo event where the library had a table.
5. BOARD REPORT TO COUNCIL: Pat informed the Board that the meeting is delayed
until July 9th at 7:30 p.m.
6. JOINT PARKSIL,IBRARY BOARD AND COUNCIL WORK SESSION: This is
tentatively scheduled for August 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the program room of the library.
7. YOUTH ADVISOR'S REPORT: Pat Nicks congratulated Shashwat Chaturvedi on his
second place award at the National Business Professionals of America Conference held at
Disneyworld. Shashwat suggested a wider effort be made to get information to all the CISD
elementary schools about Summer Reading Club. Trinity Sullivan suggested having teachers
pass out Summer Reading Club bookmarks to students. She also suggested forming a "teen elite
club" which would focus on historical fiction books and include travel to destinations and
activities associated with the books. There would be a yearly fee to join. Shashwat said that
perhaps the high school could subsidize the trips.
8. 501 (c) 3 FOUNDATION/FRIENDS GROUP: Karla Tabor announced that the IRS has
granted tax-exempt status to the Friends Group. They are awaiting approval from the State and the
goal is for the group to be functioning within a month. Discussion ensued regarding fund raising and
what to include at the Board Report to Council in July.
9. LIBRARY BOARD GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Vicki included supporting the
Friends Group as an objective at the recent Director's Retreat.
11. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pat Nicks adjourned the meeting at 7:59 p.m.
