Minutes of Meeting
October 17, 2013
Mission
To involve individuals and businesses throughout the community to promote education
and initiatives that encourages waste reduction, liter prevention, beautification and
environmental sustainability.
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on October 17, 2013 at 7:00p.m., in the
Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center located, 816 S. Coppell Rd. Coppell, TX
75019. The following members were present: Shawn Thompson, Chair, Richard Kelley,
Vice-Chair, Brandi Todd, Laura Burnett, Noel Schaefers, Carmen Price. Student
Advisors: Pooja Marella. City Liaison Jen Ferguson, Community Programs Coordinator.
Item 1: Call to Order
Shawn Thompson called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes for September 19, 2013
Motion was made and carried to approve the September 19, 2013
minutes.
Item 3: Citizens’ Forum
No citizens present.
Item 4: Report from Coppell Community Garden representative
Diane Lowe, President of CCG, was present to give the 2013 Annual
report.
Item 5: Consider approval of 2013-2014 Community Improvement Funds for
CCG
Motion was made and carried to approve the $ 25,000.00 line item in
the budget.
Item 6: Discussion and consider approval of Youth Advisor candidates
The Board discussed Youth Advisor interviews
Motion was made and carried to approve the Youth Advisor
Candidates for the 2013-2014 board.
2013-2014 Youth Advisors: Pooja Marella, Aditya Addepalli.
Laura Burnett suggested three Board members participate in future
interviews.
Item 7: Discussion and vote on December meeting
The Board discussed and a motion was carried to cancel the December
2013 meeting.
Item 8: Review Strategic Plan
The Board discussed further involvement in schools. Pooja Marella
suggested recruiting students from the environmental club and other
students through signage. Board members could potentially visit
schools to gather feedback from students.
Board discussed involving two to three elementary schools in the Keep
America Beautiful Recycle Bowl competition as a pilot program.
Bret Saunders and Pooja Marella will serve on the subcommittee.
Brandi Todd suggested the Board evaluate ways to increase recycling
participation in future strategic planning as the City of Coppell waste
contract with Waste Management will expire in 2014.
Item 9: Update from Oakfest booth subcommittee
Board discussed possible participation in Oakfest.
A motion was made and carried to not participate in Oakfest.
Item 10:Update from Volunteer Ambassador subcommittee
Brandi Todd and Richard Kelly proposed the following: provide
training to volunteers, including a short video to be viewed prior to
event, as well as a short training at the event. Additionally, “meet and
greet” social hour with the Board and other volunteers will further the
city’s goals of creating a sense of community. The Board will send
letters of appreciation to volunteers after events.
Item 11: Discussion regarding Adopt-a-Location Program
Committee discussed upcoming contract renewal with delinquent
groups, as well as re-evaluation of un-adopted locations. Reports due by
December 7
Item 12: Community Programs Report
1)Recycling Carts –
“Make Your Cart Count”
Goals are 65% Participation Rate (PR) & 20% Diversion Rate –

2)Coppell Farmers Market –
Food Day for Kids Oct 19. Food Day for Kids will
be held on October 22nd, promoting healthy food for healthy families. The event
will focus on teaching children to make their own healthy food choices. 2x/month
market Dec, Jan, Feb, March. Regular market to resume March 29.
3)CCG Education –
2014 schedule complete. Working on booking speakers.
Committee grown to 7 members. Next class-Indoor Air Quality. Marketed
toward residents and CISD staff to improve air quality in homes and schools.
4)CCG –
Share the Harvest pounds to Metrocrest: Sept 1,506 lbs. YTD 8,859 lbs.
Harvest Dinner Committee planning volunteer appreciation dinner Nov 9. 3 new
beds to be added to garden.
