BM 2014-02-20 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting February 20, 2014 Mission To involve individuals and businesses throughout the community to promote education and initiatives that encourages waste reduction, liter prevention, beautification and environmental sustainability. The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on February 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room at the Coppell Service Center located, 816 S. Coppell Rd. Coppell, TX 75019. The following members were present: Richard Kelley, Chair, Vin Merrill, Vice- Chair, Brandi Todd, Laura Burnett, Olivia Nadler, Nancy Stanford, Andrew Denes. Student Advisors: Pooja Marella, Aditya Addepalli. City Liaison Jen Ferguson, Community Programs Coordinator. Item 1: Call to Order Richard Kelley called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes for January 16, 2014 Motion was made and carried to approve the January 16, 2014 minutes. Item 3: Citizens’ Forum No citizens present. Item 4: Discussion regarding Green Team The Board discussed the importance of a recognition program for businesses who implement “green” sustainability practices, as well as offer education and support to businesses who show interest in doing so. The Board expressed revitalizing the Green Team partnership with the Coppell Chamber of Commerce. Green Team Subcommittee: Vin Merrill, Brandi Todd, Olivia Nadler. Sub-committee will meet with ex-KCB Board members and Green Team Subcommittee members, Tabitha Wilson and Shawn Thompson, to gather information about the previous partnership and give an at the next board meeting. Item 5: Discussion regarding Earthfest Earthfest Vendor Subcommittee updated the Board on the progress of securing environmentally-focused booths for Earthfest. In addition to vendor booths, entertaining face painters and Professor Brainius will be in attendance. The Board discussed potential vendors to solicit: Home Depot, Lowes, rain barrel vendor. Richard Kelley reported approximately 30 venders will participate. Item 6: Discussion regarding KCB Booth at Earthfest The Board discussed the success of the KCB Caterpillar booth, and will host the same activity again this year. KCB Earthfest Booth Subcommittee: Brandi Todd, Laura Burnett, Pooja Marella. Item 7: Discussion regarding TxDoT landscape project City Liaison, Jen Ferguson, discussed the Governors’ Community Achievement Award won by KCB by Keep Texas Beautiful and Tx Dot. The award is a grant in the amount of $210,000 for a beautification project along a TxDot right-of-way. The Board discussed the progress of the GCAA TxDot landscape project. Board discussed constructing the landscape project at the Freeport Pkwy entrance from TxDot right-of-way Hwy 121. Currently, the project is delayed due to the construction on Hwy-121 and Freeport Pkwy. Item 8: Discussion regarding future outreach activities and booths The Board discussed the importance of implementing the Strategic Plan through the use of booths at events. Booths are well received and facilitate personal engagement with residents. The Board discussed future outreach activities, including monthly booths at the Coppell Farmers Market, participation in the 4th of July festivities, and Oakfest. Board discussed the At-Your Door HHW service. Board discussed involving schools through the outreach program. Item 9: Discussion regarding Wilson Elementary School project th City Liaison, Jen Ferguson, informed the Board Wilson Elementary 5 grade class is conducting a project that studies the effects of the land development, specifically Old Town and Cypress Waters, on Coppell on native flora and fauna. The class is creating a public service announcement and interested in involving KCB in the project. The Board discussed their participation in the Wilson Elementary School environmental impact study project. The Board will reviewing the project as a group and is will invite the class to present the project to the KCB board at a board meeting. Item 10: Discussion regarding Strategic Plan for Keep Coppell Beautiful The Board continued the discussion of the 2014-15 Strategic Plan. Chair Kelley will create a 2014-15 Strategic Plan framework and distribute to the Board prior to the next board meeting. Item 11: Future business Updates from subcommittees. Item 12: Community Programs Report 1)Recycling Carts – “Make Your Cart Count” Goals are 65% Participation Rate (PR) & 20% Diversion Rate – Jan 2013 YTD 64% PR 65% PR 20% DR 17% DR 2)Coppell Farmers Market – Regular market to resume March 22. New website to promote CFM and new location to roll out end of March. New vendor requests every day. 3)CCG Education – Very successful classes in Jan and Feb. 80+ participants for Feb 1 Bugs class. Full capacity children’s Bugs are Cool class. Almost 150 participants for Feb 15 Organic Lawn Care class and Eco Friendly Lawn Equipment class. 4)CCG – Share the Harvest pounds to Metrocrest: 258 lbs. in the freezing month of Jan! New CISD rep board member. Nine new community gardeners signed up at Adopt-a-Plot sign up. Others waitlisted. 5)Biodiversity Education Center – Grand opening Earth Day- April 22. FCNP community workday Feb 19. 400 Pre-AP Bio students from CHS will have a class in March. 6) Upcoming Scheduled Events – March 22 – Small Scale Gardening class March 20 – Keep Coppell Beautiful board meeting March 29 – CFM regular schedule resumes April 12 – Earthfest April 26 – Irrigation class May 31 – Lighting class ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 8:23 p.m. by Richard Kelley.
