BM 2014-05-15 KCB Keep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting May 15, 2014 Mission To involve individuals and businesses throughout the community to promote education and initiatives that encourages waste reduction, liter prevention, beautification and environmental sustainability. The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on May 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., at the Biodiversity Education Center, 367 Freeport Pkwy, Coppell, TX. The following members were present: Richard Kelley, Chair, Laura Burnett, Olivia Nadler, Nancy Stanford, Andrew Denes, Bret Saunders. Student Advisors: Pooja Marella, Aditya Addepalli. City Liaison Jen Ferguson, Community Programs Coordinator. Item 1: Call to Order  Richard Kelley called the meeting to order at 7:05p.m. Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes for April 17, 2014  Motion was made and carried to approve the April 17, 2014 minutes. Item 3: Citizens’ Forum  No citizens present. Item 4: Community Programs Report 1)Residential Recycling Rates: City Council Goals: 65% Participation Rate (PR) & 20% Diversion Rate (DR) Jan Feb Mar April 2014 YTD 2013 Year End PR 64% 62% 62% 60% 62% 65% DR 20% 20% 18% 16% 18% 17% Compost 8% 6% 7% 10% 8% 9% 2)Coppell Farmers Market – Happy vendors, happy customers. Article in Dallas Morning News. Farm-to-Table dinner June 7. Volunteers opportunities available. 3)CCG Education – Hands on Soil Sample class. 2014 calendar and speakers finalized. Application period open for homes to be featured on the Tour of Homes: Texas SmartScape. 4)CCG – CCG will recruit youth volunteers at the Library Youth Volunteer fair May 22. Begin second weekly harvest to benefit the Coppell Senior Center. 5)Biodiversity Education Center – Program Committee getting classes and speakers scheduled through spring ’15. RecConnect summer classes. 6)Old Town Coppell – Water fountain/ Splash pad hours – Beginning 5/31, daily hours will be Sunday – Friday 11am – 10pm and Saturdays 8am – 10pm. 7)CISD – District-wide Sustainability Fair 5/22. 4:00pm at Coppell High School 8)Clean Coppell – 1732 pre-registered. As of 5/15: 1255 volunteers logged 1937 hours. 24 pending reports. 9) Upcoming Scheduled Events – May 17 – Hands on Composting class May 17 – KCB booth at CFM May 22 – CISD Sustainability Fair, 4pm Coppell HS May 31 – Sustainable Homes - Energy class June 7 – Farm-to-Table dinner June 19 – KCB board meeting at Biodiversity Education Center June 22-25 – Keep Texas Beautiful conference, Austin June 28 – KCB booth at CFM July 3 – Spirit of Coppell Fireworks event (KCB booth) July 26 – KCB booth at CFM August 21 – KCB board meeting August 23 - KCB booth at CFM Sept 23 – KCB Annual Report to City Council 7:30pm Item 5: Discussion regarding Spirit of Coppell participation  Board repeat the recycle game booth hosted at last year’s event.  Board discussed logistics of improving this year’s booth.  Board will add educational materials to engage adults, and encourage event participants to “like” the KCB Facebook page. Item 6: Update from Green Team subcommittee  Board discussed refocusing Green Team business recognition program to focus exclusively on recycling, rather than several different sustainability components.  Board discussed participation and partnership with the City of Coppell to develop an incentive program.  Board discussed focusing on: restaurants and strip malls.  Board discussed City of Plano’s green business recognition program.  Subcommittee: Laura Burnett, Olivia Nadler, Bret Saunders Item 7: Discussion regarding Coppell Farmers Market Booths  Board discussed Board and volunteer participation at the CFM booths.  Board signed up for shifts to man the booth. Item 8: Discussion regarding Litter Index  Board discussed logistics of the Litter Index survey as required the remain in Good Standing with Keep America Beautiful  Boardmembers, Laura Burnett, Olivia Nadler, Nancy Stanford, will meet 6/19, 5:30pm at the Biodiversity Education Center to complete the survey Item 9: Discussion regarding Strategic Plan  Board discussed the Coppell 2030 and focusing KCB programs to support those goals.  Board discussed new Green Team business recognition program as it support the goals.  Board discussed raising awareness of importance and correctly sorting recyclables and waste at events through signage.  Board discussed getting involved in the schools through PTOs, and encouraging school participation at Earthfest. Board will review Keep America Beautiful Waste-In-Place and Recycle-Bowl programs and discuss possible future implementation in schools.
