BM 2014-06-19 KCBKeep Coppell Beautiful Minutes of Meeting June 19, 2014 Mission To involve individuals and businesses throughout the community to promote education and initiatives that encourages waste reduction, liter prevention, beautification and environmental sustainability. The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board met on June 19, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., at the Biodiversity Education Center, 367 Freeport Pkwy, Coppell, TX. The following members were present: Richard Kelley, Chair, Laura Burnett, Nancy Stanford, Andrew Denes. City Liaison Jen Ferguson, Community Programs Coordinator. Item 1: Call to Order  Richard Kelley called the meeting to order at 7:09p.m. Item 2: Consider Approval of Minutes for June 19, 2014  Motion was made and carried to approve the June 19, 2014 minutes. Item 3: Citizens’ Forum  No citizens present. Item 4: Community Programs Report 1) Residential Recycling Rates: City Council Goals: 65% Participation Rate (PR) & 20% Diversion Rate (DR) Jan Feb Mar April May 2014 YTD 2013 Year End PR 64% 62% 62% 60% 62% 62% 65% DR 20% 20% 18% 16% 16% 18% 17% Compost 8% 6% 7% 10% 12% 8% 9% 2) Coppell Farmers Market – Market to Kitchen chef demo on Southside of pavilion in grass at 10am. Many articles follow- up newspaper articles and local media in attendance. Veggie Valet to start this Saturday with CHS NHS students. 3) CCG Education – Receiving and organizing Texas SmartScape Tour. Possible partnership with FCNP. 4) CCG – 1300 lbs last month—extremely impressive. Volunteer gardeners are teaming up with school gardens to mentor and grow each school’s efforts. North Texas Food Bank has contacted CCG about partnership with CFM to learn more about the successful relationships. 5) Biodiversity Education Center – RecConnect classes, Coppell ISD, Environmental Education Committee, Friends of the Coppell Nature Park, and other users. 6) Upcoming Scheduled Events – June 19 – KCB board meeting at Biodiversity Education Center June 22-25 – Keep Texas Beautiful conference, Austin June 28 – KCB booth at CFM July 3 – Spirit of Coppell Fireworks event (KCB booth) July 26 – KCB booth at CFM August 2 – Hands-on Soil Sampling class August 21 – KCB board meeting August 23 - KCB booth at CFM Sept 6 – Seeds class with FarmGirl, Donelle Simmons Sept 23 – KCB Annual Report to City Council 7:30pm October 4 – Tour of Coppell: Texas SmartScapes October 11 – Design your own SmartScape class October 16 – KCB board meeting October 18 – Wild flower seeding October 18 - Oakfest Item 5: Update from Spirit of Coppell subcommittee  Spirit of Coppell subcommittee updated the Board on the progress of KCB’s participation in the event.  Board discussed the logistics of the Spirit of Coppell booth including supplies, location, timing and volunteers.  Details were finalized for the event. Item 6: Update from Green Team subcommittee  Subcommittee: Laura Burnett, Olivia Nadler, Bret Saunders.  All subcommittee members absent from 6/19/14 meeting.  Staff liaison gave the Board a brief update on the work so far. Item 7: Discussion regarding Coppell Farmers Market Booths  Board discussed Board member attendance at the June 28 booth. Item 8: Discussion regarding future outreach  Board discussed outreach in the schools by offering Keep America Beautiful’s Waste in Place and Recycle Bowl programs.  Board discussed offering own environmental education classes to students.  Board discussed partnering with CISD and private schools.  Board discussed time limitations and training volunteers to conduct outreach.  Board decided to put school outreach on hold through the summer due to conflicting schedules.
