MEMORANDUM
TO:
Library Board
FROM:
Victoria A. Chiavetta, Director of Library Services
DATE:
July 27, 2015
SUBJECT:
As I write this report, it is exactly four weeks from today that we plan to close the library
and begin moving to our temporary facility, barring any delays. The old fire admin building
is renovated, computer drops are installed, and it is ready for us to move in. We have a
new book return installed at Town Center and will begin making runs to it on a daily basis
th
while we are still in our home library. We hope to reopen on Tuesday, September the 8,
ready to resume story times, programs, and our regular library services.
for construction to begin.
Everyone in the City that has had anything to do with helping us during this transition has
been phenomenal. It has been a long time coming but because of many people, here it is!
I greatly appreciate the role that you, the Library Board, has had supporting us in getting
to this moment in time. Thank you very much and I look forward to the exciting months
ahead!
Workload Indicators
Summer Reading Program is officially over this week. The library had a great summer. All
of the special programs had very good attendance. The Teen workshops were extremely
popular this year; most workshops were not limited by space so more teens were able to
participate. Game and movie days were busy as well.
Staff has been working hard to ensure that the public is aware of the coming construction
project and the fact that we are moving to a temporary location. We have provided
information about the temporary address, recommended alternate locations for study and
program room usage and marketed the date the library is closing. Every day staff reminds
the customers about the move so they will be prepared when the time comes. We will
continue to provide information along the way as much as possible in a variety of media
outlets.
July statistics will not be available at the time the agenda goes out, but we will send it to
you as soon as possible. If they are anything like June, the trend of declining circulation
and visits continues. Digital usage keeps increasing, particularly of the mobile catalog and
interestingly, downloadable audiobooks. I expect that we will see these trends for the rest
of the year and into the next during construction of the expanded library.
Programs
Coppell Reads is set to start in September with special programs scheduled for October.
The book this year is My Life in France by Julia Child. We are planning a French cooking
La Pompe at the Senior and
Community Center, and more to be determined. The library will reconvene regular story
times and programs in mid-September.
