BM 2017-07-13 LBCOZBY LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY COMMONS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES JULY 13, 2017 The Cozby Library and Community Commons Advisory Board met in regular session on Thursday, July 13, 2017 in the Conference Room of the library. 1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Janet Koester at 7:00 p.m. Other board members present were Emily Nance, Frank Gasparo, Jan Lorrain, Adrienne Renner, Mahesh Guduru, Madeleine White, and Wednesday Foster. Staff in attendance were Library Director Vicki Chiavetta, Assistant Director Dennis Quinn and Sr. Administrative Technician Kim McGrath. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE MAY 11TH BOARD MEETING: Adrienne Renner moved to approve the minutes and Emily Nance seconded the motion. All were in favor and the minutes were approved. 3. CITIZENS' APPEARANCES: None 4. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT: • Vicki thanked the Board members who helped with the Celebrate Coppell event. • Workload Indicators: This year's Summer Reading Program has been very successful. The library had good numbers for the gate count. There has been an increase in all statistics with eBooks showing the greatest increase. Vicki talked about the complaints regarding the noise in the library. Dennis explained the new sound abatement system which is tentatively scheduled to be in place this month. Discussion followed. • Programs: The ESL Conversation Club offers free classes in conversational English and has seen good attendance. The Formosa Cultural Festival was organized by a group of teens and had 120 people in attendance. This event came out of the library's Cultural Committee. The SalesForce for Youth workshop was in partnership with the Dallas SalesForce organization and very well attended. 5. UNITED FOR LIBRARIES PRESENTATION: Dennis gave a PowerPoint presentation on the United for Libraries organization. Discussion followed. 6. AUGUST JOINT BOARD MEETING: The Joint Board meeting with the City Council and Parks Board is scheduled for August 7`h at 6 p.m. at the CORE. Vicki would like to provide City Manager Mike Land with items the library plans to take to Council. Vicki mentioned several ways the library has implemented the Strategic Plan. Some of the items suggested for inclusion were Kaleidoscope, noise abatement, the number of programs the library sponsors and the concept of the library as a meeting and community space.. 7. STRATEGIC PLAN PROGRESS: Vicki updated the Board on the progress in implementing the library's Strategic Plan. The library has partnered with several groups including Sahaja Meditation which is doing well. The Social Security workshop held in June was successful. The literacy backpacks are proving very popular. The library continues to do the Outreach at the Farmer's Market program. The volunteer program is getting more participants. Open Mic Night has been popular this year. Dennis is working on a quote for the outdoor trellis. Podiums for the meeting room have been purchased. Catalogs on the end panels are scheduled to be installed soon. Madeleine White suggested a microfiber cloth giveaway. 10. YOUTH ADVISOR'S REPORT: None 11. FRIENDS OF THE COPPELL LIBRARY REPORT: Emily Nance said the group is making preparations for North Texas Giving Day on September 10' and the next Friends Book Sale which is scheduled for November 181h. 12. LIBRARY BOARD GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: No discussion.
