Minutes of April 20, 2000
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Committee met on April 20, 2000 at 7pm in the second floor
conference room at Town Center, 255 Parkway Boulevard, Coppell, Texas. The following
members were present: Steve Mobley, Barbara Piels, Ray Foster, Julia Petty, and Diana Sircar.
Amanda Vanhoozier, City of Coppell, liaison was also present. Members not present were:
Richard Murphy and Pat Lambert.
Item one: Call to Order - Steve Mobley called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm.
Item two: Approval of Minutes Julia Petty made a motion to approve the minutes and Ray
Foster seconded. Minutes of March 16, 2000 were approved.
Item three: Citizen's Forum - There were no citizens present.
Item four: Plan of Work Approval -The committee agreed to discuss the Plan of Work under
Item Seven.
Item five: Adopt-a-Location Status and Action - Diana Sircar reported that there was 13
locations adopted in 2000. The CHS Varsity Cheerleaders also want to adopt a location along
with about 4 other groups that are interested. Barbara Piels passed out disks with the letter to
solicit AAL. Ray Foster will work with the businesses on the West side of Coppell. The
committee discussed the need for a qualifying checklist to see if a location is really needing
adopted. The existing signs where groups have not adopted will be blanked out with: Needs
Adopting, 972-304-3560. Signs will be ordered for the new groups.
Item six: Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off and CLEAN COPPELL EARTHWEEK
Report- Steve Mobley congratulated the Parks and Leisure Services Department, the KCB
Committee, and the city staff and council for a successful event. Approximately 375 rolled
through on April 15, 2000. The committee estimated a total 80,000 lbs. of trash was collected
through the litter pick-up, Clean-up/Fix-up and Brush Chipper Day. That was 10 times more than
last year. Barbara Piels reported the Earth Decorated Grocery Sacks were displayed on Channel 5
3 days, at the Post Office and Town Center. The Lady Bug release at Town Center Elementary
was the kicker for the 5 o'clock news on Channel 5. In evaluating the event, the committee
discussed the need for more recycling of aluminum, and hand washing station for those eating the
free lunch after picking up trash, and providing plastic gloves for volunteers picking up litter.
Item seven: CLEAN CITIES 2000 Status Review and Action - Steve Mobley made a
presentation reviewing the quarterly report to the City Council on April 11, 2000. A letter to the
mayor from a Boy Scout and the questions about Household Hazardous Waste from the council
were discussed. Over the next few months, the committee will look at HHW collection
alternatives, availability of grants, and costs. Steve Mobley presented the Plan of Work for Keep
Coppell Beautiful. Ray Foster made a motion to approve the plan and it was seconded by
Barbara Piels. The Plan of Work was approved.
Item eight: New Business - For May 18, 2000 agenda; Review of Budget, HHW proposal,
Procurement policy development.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm.
