LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES
May 10, 2001
The William T. Cozby Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session on Thursday
May 10, 2001 in the Board Room at the William T. Cozby Public Library.
1. CALL TO ORDER - The meeting was called to order by Chair, Patricia Samms at
7:00p.m. Other board members present were Douglas Glantz, Nancy Lemay, Jane Darling
and Jeanne Heath. Staff in attendance were Library Director, Kathy Edwards, Children's
Librarian, Debbie Brightwell and Janet Lance, Administrative Secretary.
2. READING AND APPROVAL OF BOARD MINUTES DATED April 5, 2001 -
Jane Darling motioned to approve the minutes as written and Jeanne Heath seconded the
motion. All were in favor and the minutes were approved.
3. CITIZENS APPEARANCES - None
4. DEBBIE BRIGHTWELL, LIBRARIAN SUPERVISOR, SUMMER READING
CLUB UPDATE: The theme for the Summer Reading Club this year is "To the Library
and Beyond". Sign up for Summer Reading Club begins on May 30, 2001.
The three divisions will be Read to Me Group, Passport Readers and Teen Zone Reader.
Debbie currently has 27 "Volunteens" signed up to help her with the program again this
year. She will have orientations on June 1 and June 4. "Volunteens" will need to attend
one of these sessions.
5. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Staffing: The library reorganization has been approved and we will have two
divisions, Public Services and Access Services. Connie Moss has been reclassified to Public
Services Manager and Sharon Castleberry to Access Services Manager. We are currently
advertising for two Librarian Supervisor positions.
Budget Update: Kathy met with Budget Committee last week for the internal
review. Kathy stated that for the coming year she will be concentrating on developing
library staff and fully implementing the new system.
Facilities Update: We are currently having the reading tables in the library being
repaired. The vendor agreed to repair the tables at her cost as they cracked within the initial
warranty period. We will be getting 2 more carrels for the library.
System Update: Microsoft's SMS Training will take place next week at the library.
Sharon Castleberry and Connie Moss will be going to California in June for more system
training, in conjunction with the American Library Association Meeting.
6. BOOKSALE - The booksale is schedule for the last weekend in October. Kathy
asked Jeanne Heath to see if they could meet with Linda Barnett, Friends of Library officer,
to discuss the booksale with her.
7. DISCUSSION ON STUDENT INPUT - Douglas Glantz will work on a survey for
high school students, to present to the advisory board in August.
8. REVIEW LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING SCHEDULE - The board
will not meet in June and July. The next meeting will be on August 9, 2001. Patricia
Samms made a motion that the September meeting be cancelled. The motion was approved
by Nancy Lemay and seconded by Doug Glantz. Carried.
Douglas Glantz will represent the library board on the E Gov Citizen Task Force.
9. OTHER BUSINESS AS MAY BE LEGALLY CONDUCTED - Jeanne Heath,
Patricia Samms and Kathy Edwards plan to attend the NETLS meeting in Dallas on June
13, 2001.
Sharon Castleberry, Connie Moss, Diana Perkins and Debbie Brightwell will be attending
ALA in California next month.
Debbie Brightwell attended a ceremony in Dallas to accept the TEJAS Community Service
Award, presented to the library from the Girl Scouts of the TEJAS Council.
10. ADJOURNMENT - Jeanne Heath motioned and Jane Darling seconded to adjourn
at 7:55 p.m. Carried.
