Minutes of February 28, 2002
The Keep Coppell Beautiful Committee met on February 28, 2002 at 7pm in the Second Floor
Conference Room at Town Center, 255 Parkway Boulevard, Coppell, Texas. The following
members were present; Thomas Guidry, Jr, Chairperson, Julia Petty, Co-Chairperson, Pat
Lambert, Judi Smith, Becky Moore and Amanda Vanhoozier, City of Coppell, liaison. Not
Present: Mark Hoffman.
Item 1:
Call to Order - Thomas Guidry called the meeting to order.
Item 2:
Approval of Minutes from January 17, 2002- Minutes were approved as
written.
Item 3:
Citizen's Forum - No citizens were present
Item 4:
Mayor Breakfast Report by Chair and Co-chair- Thomas and Julia
reviewed the information that was discussed at the Mayor's Breakfast on
February 23, 2002. It included the city council goals, on-going city
activities, and budget. They concluded that the information given by KCB
committee was well received.
Item 5:
Discussion of Community Involvement Objectives -Thomas reported
that there were four in attendance at the Subcommittee meeting on Feb.
26, 2002. He gave an overview of the ideas that were brought to the
committee from the participants. The committee discussed recruiting
more at the Earthfest by setting up a KCB committee booth.
Item 6:
Discussion of Education Status - Judi reported that she contacted Keep
Lewisville Beautiful's Executive Director, who said that there has not been
much interest in the Police Department for Illegal Dumping Education.
Judi reported that she had established an avenue for the "Did You Know?"
articles with the city of Coppell Information Officer, Sharon Logan. The
first DYK will be in the March CityDesk, water bill insert as well as other
city public information venues. Amanda reported that the Solid Waste
Project was approved by the NCTCOG Resource Conservation Council for
funding. There will be many opportunities for teacher and youth training
in organics recycling, including the Waste in Place Training for
elementary teachers.
Item 7:
Discussion of Waste Reduction Status, including a PAYT presentation
- Pat Lambert gave brief overview of the Pay as You Throw program and
some of the questions that came up at the subcommittee. The committee
discussed having a representative from Waste Management at the May
meeting to speak about PAYT. They also discussed inviting Michael
Ahnhut, who had experience with waste reduction in Belgium. The
committee continued to discuss Multifamily Housing recycling and yard
trimming recycling. The committee felt that the focus should be on Yard
Trimmings recycling first, because of the larger amount and greatest need.
Item 8:
Discussion of Litter Prevention Objectives, including the Clean
Coppell-Earthweek event and Report of Adopt-a-Location Status-
Becky Moore reported that there were three AAL groups that have not
responded to her calling. Amanda noted that they were CHS groups and
went on the school calendar year. The committee discussed the KCB
committee's location and wanted to look at the litter index to determine
needed areas. The committee discussed presenting five or more year
plaques to the AAL groups at the Clean Coppell.
The committee discussed Clean Coppell-Earthweek 2002 on April 20, 2002.
Amanda reported the booth registration is up to ten different groups. The
location of the event was discussed to provide for more parking. It was
determined the event needs to be in one area not too strung out. Also
discussed was a speaker stage or indoor classroom during the day.
Item 9:
Litter Index Training -Training postponed until the Litter Index on April
13th when the committee will have a training session then go out on the
route. Amanda reported that the annual KAB report will be due in May and
the Litter Index for 2002 will need to be included.
Item 10:
Discussion Beautification Objectives - Amanda reported that the
wildflowers had germinated at the trailhead at Moore Road Park.
Item 11:
New Business to be placed on next meeting's agenda-Clean Coppell
countdown
