Re: Tree removal on Southwestern Boulevard
Dear Mayor Stover:
Is it necessary to remove all the existing trees on the south side of Southwestern
Boulevard as part of the road improvement?
There are six mature native pecan trees that are marked for removal on the project
blueprints. I have viewed the blueprints and it is not clear to me, or the several city
employees who helped me view them, why it is necessary to remove the trees. The
current road is 22' wide curb to curb. The proposed road is 24'. The trees are ~20' and
'25 feet further to the south.
Yes, there are some elevation issues. And yes, the bridge is wider than the
existing bridge. By appearances though, it seems that there is enough room to build a
road without having to remove the trees.
Many years ago I questioned the decision to remove the trees on Bethel Road at
Denton Tap. As it turned out, it was not necessary to remove the trees. They now serve as
a border for the new residential development there.
Why retain the trees on Southwestern? We do not know if future landscaping
plans would benefit from retaining the trees as a natural feature of a proposed
development. We certainly want to retain as many natural landscaping features as we
improve the city. It takes forty years to replace a forty year old tree, and these particular
trees are a rare feature in our community. Please look into this.
Since ly,
I
