MEMORANDUM ~. ~ ~ ~-5
FROM THE ~'"'"°
DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING
To: Jim Witt, City Manager
From: Ken Griffin, P.E., Director of Engineering/Public Works
Date: September 9, 2004
RE: Installation of "No Left-turn" signs on Denton Tap Rd. at the private driveways
approximately 585 feet north of north curb line of Sandy Lake Rd.
In a recent review of accidents on Denton Tap Rd. at the driveway that serves Taco Bell and Goodyear
on the west and the driveway that serves Wendy's and Tom Thumb on the east, it was noted that there
have been four accidents since January 1, 2004. In reviewing the schematics of the accidents, three of
the accidents were T-bone accidents caused by vehicles coming out of the private driveways and trying
to cross the median on Denton Tap Rd. and then being struck by vehicles that were already in the north
or south bound lanes. The fourth accident was caused by a southbound vehicle executing a U-turn at
the same median and then striking a northbound car.
Based on warrants in the TMUTCD, a typical intersection that has five accidents in a 12-month period
could meet the requirements for the installation of a traffic signal. Because of the proximity of this
driveway to the intersection of Sandy Lake Rd. and Denton Tap Rd., the installation of a traffic signal
and/or stop sign on Denton Tap Rd. is not feasible.
In an effort to protect motorists on Denton Tap Rd., my recommendation is that "No Left-turn" signs
be installed at the east and west driveways entering Denton Tap Rd. approximately 585 feet north of
Sandy Lake Rd.
In reviewing the times of the various accidents, it was noted that the earliest accident was at 7:45 a.m.
and the latest accident was at 6:30 p.m. Therefore, my recommendation would be to restrict left-turn
movements from those two driveways onto Denton Tap Rd. for a timeframe of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.,
seven days a week.
Based on my observation and in accordance with the City of Coppell Code of Ordinances, Article 8-2,
Traffic Control Devices, Section 8-2-10, Duty to erect, I will be installing signs to prohibit Left-turn
movements on Denton Tap Road from the driveways approximately 585 feet north of the north curb line
of Sandy Lake Rd.
The signs should be installed within the next week. If you should have any questions or comments please
feel free to contact me at your convenience.
