ST9902-CS071101(11/1/2007) Keith Marvin -West Sandy Lake Road Bridge Page From: "Matt Atkins" <matkins@tnp-online.com> To: "Keith Marvin" <KMARVIN@ci.coppell.tx.us> CC: "Mark Holliday" <mholliday@tnp-online.com>, "Delvin Black" <dblack@tnp-o Date: 11/1/2007 1:57 PM Subject: West Sandy Lake Road Bridge Attachments: rlstde05.pdf Keith, We have finally tracked down an answer to the types of bridge railings that TxDOT will allow on the bridge of Cottonwood Creek. Essentially, the rails that Coppell has used on other bridges will not be allowed adjacent to any traffic on a bridge with TxDOT review since they have not been crash tested. TxDOT does have a rail that is similar in nature to the ones that have been used in Coppell, and I have attached the details (C411-Texas Classic). The proposed bridge has a total of three railings on it, two of which are adjacent to traffic and would need to be TxDOT standards. The rail on the outside of the trail could be any type that you wanted, however, our structural engineer does not recommend mixing the types of rails on the same bridge due to the possibility of confusion during construction and economics. Please let me know your thoughts regarding this issue. We are working toward a listing of the things that will change in our contract and preparing an amendment for you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either me or Mark. Thanks and have a great day! Matt Atkins, P.E. This rail is only approved for low speed use, design speeds of 45 mph and less. Rail anchorage details shown On this standard may require modification for select structure types. See appropriate details elsewhere in plans for these modifications. All concrete for railing wall shall be Class "C". A CIOSS "C" Pone rub) finish shall be applied to all railing surfaces unless Otherwise shown elsewhere on the plans. Shop drawings will not be required for this roil. Bronze Star shall be cast of architectural bronze having the following composition: Capper 85 %, Tin 5 %, Lead 5 %, Zinc 5 %. Bronze Stor shall be attached with Type V epoxy. Epoxy shall completely fill void in holes after studs are inserted and cover entire star-concrete interface. Clamp star until epoxy achieves set. Care shall be taken to avoid visible epoxy "squeeze out" from under star. If shown on Bridge Layout or other plan sheets, railing can be constructed without pilasters. See Bridge Layout or other plan sheets for the following: dimensions with the number of windows, dimensions with the number of pilasters (if onyl, given window type, inclusion of bronze stars, inclusion of construction year with abutment identity. All reinforcing shall be Grade 60. Face of roil and pilasters, parapet shall be plumb unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Epoxy coat Bars U and WU if slab bars ore epoxy coated, Average weight of roiling with no overlay increase and no pilasters is 350 plf.
