Ultra- Rib, in diameters from 21" through 30", provides a r'n~n~mum pipe stiffness of 46 psil the sar-~e as SDR 35 Its tough, durable rib design is capable of withstanding a minimum ~mpact loading of 210 lblbs for 8" and 220 ft lbs for 12" thru 30" when tested ~n accordance wilh ASTMD2444. Hydraulics The smooth interior wail of Ultra-Rib provides excollon~ flow rates and resists the build up of solids The long lenglh of Ultra Rib pipe {13 feet) and the reduced number of required joints yield a Manning flow coefficient of n - .CO9 under full Ilow conditions the lowest resistance of any sanitary drain p~pe. Chemical & Abrasion Resistance The cher-qical resistance of PVC pipe is legendary. Acids. alkalies, and normally diluted and buffered hydrocarbons have no effect on ~ho pipe and 9askers Aggressive soil conditions duo to sulphates, carbonates or sea water are tolerated easily by Ultra Rib, as are industrial oflluenfs and acid rain PVC pipe has been subjected to abrasion tests by several independent laboratories. These tests prove that PVC pipe will resist abrasion be~tor than concrete and steel pipe Where abrasive flows are encountered, PVC pipe offers exceptional resistance to wear PVCs durability ensures that Ultra-Rib will have a long life roqu~ring little maintenance YourETI representative will bo glad to give specific recommendations concerning Ultra Rib's chemical and abrasion resistance. // / // '/ //// Joint Performance An infiltration rate of less than 50 U.S. gal./inch dia./mile/day can be assured using the Ultra-Rib patented joint design. Catch basin cave-ins are eliminated because the Ultra Rib joint will not permit infiltration of fine bedding materials. The manhole adapters supplied with Ultra-Rib are equally tight. Field Cutting and Joining Because the ribs are perpendicular to the axis of the pipe, the pipe can be cut between any rib. The rubber gasket can then be placed between the second and third ribs and the pipe joined together to form a water- tight seal. I / ,, il/t //// Installation Preparation Ultra Rib is a flexible conduit The ombedmont should be designed to limit deflection to 75% Tho long lerm deflection chart on the adjacent page may be used to easily determine acceptable burial conditions Additional design information may be obtained from the Uni Bell Handbook of PVC Pipe Design and Construction. Ultra Rib should be installed using the same good construclion practices as those currently used for SDR35. Additional installation information may be obtained from Uni-B 5, "Recommended Practice for the Installation of PVC Sewer Pipe", or ASTM D2321, "Recommended Practice Ior Underground Installation of Flexible Thermoplastic Sewer Pipe." Foundation Foundation preparation is only required when the trench bottom is unstable. Any loundalion that will support a rigid pipe without causing loss of grade or flexural breaking of pipe will be more than adequate for Ultra-Rib. Bedding The bedding directly underneath tho pipe is required only to bring the trench bottom up to grade and provide uniform longitudinal support for the pipe It should not be so thick or soft that the pipe will settle and lose grade. A layer of material from 4" to 6' thick ~s typically placed to establish line. grade and support. Bell holes should be excavated to insure uniform bearing. Haunching Tine haunching area is the most important in terms of limiting the deflection of a llexible pipe This is the area that should be compacted to the proctor densities shown in the long term deflection chart on the adjacent page. Material which may be adequately placed and compacted to required levels for the specific applica tion is suitable. It is important that no voids exist in this area. Good placement and compactior~ of the haunching is the key to deflection control. Initial Backfill The initial backfill protects the pipe from tine final backfill placement and compaction. It begins at apprc spnng lin~ (the top of Backfill T ( Pipe Width ) Cover '4/ ]7 ]2 ]] ' Backfill Trench Cross Section Showing Terminology Final Backfill The materials used and densities required ir-' this area should be based on tho structure which lies aoove the pipe. This area provides no acdi~ional support to tho pipe. Where tine line runs through a backyard or open field, native material dumped or lightly compacted may be sufficient Under a road surface a material which can be highly compacted is requireo and the initial backfill should be compacted as well Compactive Effort The compactive effort will be reduced if moisture content is controlled to optimum levels Never contact the p~pe with compactors. At all points in the pipe zone adequate compaction of approved materials can be aclnioved us~r-~g portable vibrators. For appJications where m~nimum cover conditions ex~st (a r'nln~mum cover of one foot can be recommended for loads up to and including H20) Olass I materials are needed to reduce compactive effort required over the p~po to achieve a high level of compaction (typically 95% Std. Proctor under a road surface). Heavier equipment, such as Hydro Hammers, should be used only when needed to achieve required densities, and not less than 3 above the pipe. / ? , i/' // / , // // : :? l Long Term Deflection of PVC The chart below was developed to show acceptable burial conditions for Ultra Rib pipe. The areas shaded green will result in long term deflections of less lhan 7.5%. Because Ultra-Rib will not fail at deflections less than 30%. an allowable deflection limit el 75% provides a salety factor of 4 and can be conservatively recommended. The chart eliminates the need lo calculate defleclions and gives the design engineer a ready reference. For example, an application which calls for depths of cover of 14 feet or less, with native Class IV materials can be designed by checking the chart For 14 feel of cover we note that the square across from Class IV material compacted to 65% ~s gray and lherofore riel recommended However, for Class IV material connpacted to 75% or better the square is green under the 14 foot cover column. Therefore, the native soil may be used for haunching as long as it is compacted to 75% or greater. Tho chart does not take into account live loads. When live loads are not a factor, the chart can be used directly to determine whether long term deflection of the Ultra Rib is below 7.5%. When live loads must be considered, determine first, the combined total external load on the pipe. Next, determine the equivalent pnsm load (without live load) for the particular p~pe size involved Determine the height of cover (ft) for the equivalent prism load. Using this height of cover with the bedding class and proctor density, enter the maximum long term deflection chart, to determine the burial conditions which are acceptable. In working with these charts, it becomes apparent that: I Soil density in the p~pe zone plays a greater role than soil type in the control of deflection in buried flexible conduits 2. The amount of dofleclion ~s independent of pipe size. Note pipe size does riel appear in lhe chart for maximum long term delloctions.
