Corridor Information
History
The Cotton Belt Corridor passes through portions of Tarrant, Dallas, and
Collin Counties and is recommended for passenger rail service in the
long -range transportation plan for the Dallas -Fort Worth Metropolitan
Area. Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority (DART) and the Fort Worth
Transportation Authority (The T) have requested the Regional Transpor-
tation Council (RTC) and North Central Texas Council of Governments
( NCTCOG) take the lead role in developing innovative financing mecha-
nisms and revenue streams to implement passenger rail service in the
corridor.
The corridor has been included in various DART plans beginning with
the 1983 DART Final Service Plan. The Cotton Belt corridor has also
been included in NCTCOG's Metropolitan Transportation Plans (MTP)
since 1993 as an alignment alternative for passenger rail. In 2005, The T
initiated planning for the Southwest -to- Northeast (SW2NE) Commuter
Rail project, intended to implement passenger rail service from south-
west Fort Worth to Dallas /Fort Worth International Airport ( DFWIA) by
2014. In 2006, the DART Board of Directors adopted the 2030 Transit
System Plan, including the Cotton Belt Corridor as the preferred align-
ment for east -west service between DFWIA and the DART Red Line.
NCTCOG completed the Conceptual Engineering and Funding Study
(CE & FS) for the Cotton Belt Corridor in April 2010. The primary study
purpose was to support early implementation of passenger rail service in
the corridor. The CE & FS focused on the corridor from DFWIA to the
DART Red Line.
