STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS
CONSULTING GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION TESTING
AND INSPECTION SERVICES
Introduction
Terra-Mar is a consulting engineering firm specializing in
geotechnical and environmental engineering, and, testing and
inspection of materials during construction. The company has
full-service offices in Dallas, Austin, Houston and a project
office in Fort Worth.
Terra-Mar has experienced continual growth in the number of
clients it services and the complexity of projects. In 1986, the
firm worked on over 550 projects with individual project fees up
to $120,000. Our growth is the result of our dedication to value
engineering, i.e., high quality technical services directed at
practical, economical problem solutions. The ability to meet
fast-tract project schedules is another factor in our growth and
geographic expansion.
Scope of Services
Services provided by Terra-Mar, Inc. include geotechnical and
environmental investigations involving on-site studies,
laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and reporting along
with construction administration, construction materials
inspection and testing.
Experience and Capabilities
Terra-Mar has participated in numerous projects involving both
geotechnical investigative work and subsequent materials testing
for industrial buildings, office buildings, retail centers,
highways, roadways, bridges, and large storage/parking areas.
These projects have been performed under contract to private
developers as well as city, county, state, and other public
agencies.
Terra-Mat's engineering staff has experience on domestic and
international projects but with a heavy concentration of
assignments in the Southwest, particularly Texas. Our engineers'
experience levels range from 8 to 25 years. Likewise, our
technicians' experience varies from 3 to 33 years, with the bulk
of this being for testing laboratories operating in Texas. A
current list of Terra-Mat's staff is attached.
Our engineering staff has both experience and know-how in dealing
with the varied soil conditions of the Southwest and the Gulf
Coast. In the Dallas/Fort Worth Metropolitan and in the Austin
area, surficial soils consist of residual clays that have a high
shrink/swell potential with variations in moisture changes. The
clays are underlain by weathered and unweathered shales or
limestone. Consequently, special engineering precautions have to
be applied when building structures and pavements on these soils.
In the Houston area, considerations of expansive clays are mixed
with additional problems of subsidence and waterfront
environment. On projects involving significant loads, long term
settlement behavior must be assessed to estimate both the
magnitude and the rate of consolidation. Lateral soil pressures
must be evaluated for many projects including retaining walls,
drainage structures, and bridge abutments. Drainage and
dewatering recommendations are required on pro3ects involving
deep excavations in alluvial river deposits and near coastal
sites.
Our engineering staff has been involved in a wide variety of
projects. Engineers in our Dallas office were involved in the
design phase of a six lane highway (Belt Line Road) for the City
of Coppell, Dallas County, Texas. Recommendations were made
concerning lime stabilization, cement stabilization and
fill/subgrade preparation for maximum long term pavement
performance. This study included determination of wheel loading,
traffic intensity and pavement thickness for a range of concrete
strengths.
Engineers in the Houston office recently performed a study for an
existing marine terminal located along a portion of the Corpus
Christi ship channel being deepened by dredging. The scope of
work included an evaluation of required foundation conditions,
suitable slope ratios for underwater slopes, and lateral pile
analyses for off-shore mooring dolphins. Another recent pro3ect
involved the investigation of compression foundations at a site
near Mobile, Alabama, experiencing excessive vibrations and
settlement, and, included field supervision of densification by
the Terra-Probe method as a remedial measure.
In the Austin office, our engineering staff has completed a
series of reports for a 2,200 acre tract in Austin. These
reports included design and construction recommendations for a 52
inch diameter City of Austin water transmission main, pavement
design for ma3or county arterials and main collector streets, and
FHA residential geotechnical studies.
Our engineering services are enhanced by analyses using computer
programs that solve problems typically encountered in many
geotechnical projects. These programs which are run on in-house
computers include the following:
- 2 or 3 dimensional Finite Element
Analyses for Seepage
- Beam Column
- Slope Stability
- Axial Pile Capacity
- Shrink/Swell Movement in Expansive
Clays
- Settlement Analysis
- Large Mat Design
- Wave Equation for
Analysis of Pile
Driving
- Pile Group Efficiency
- Dynamic Response of
Piles
- Lateral Earth Pressure
for Bulkheads
A partial list of recent Terra-Mar projects is enclosed.
Laboratory Facilities
Terra-Mar maintains in-house laboratory facilities for conducting
both geotechnical and construction materials testing. These
facilities are furnished with modern, state-of-the-art testing
equipment oriented to testing technologies that include concrete,
soils, bituminous, steel and non-destructive. All testing is
performed in accordance with ASTM, ACI, TSDHPT, AASHTO, and other
specialized agencies such as U.S. Army COE, as required. Our
laboratories facilities have been inspected and meet the
requirements of the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory
(CCRL) and the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation
(AALA). Our firm is a member of the American Council of
Independent Laboratories.
As a part of the Terra-Mat's quality assurance program, all test
equipment is inspected and calibrated on a scheduled basis to
ensure compliance with appropriate specifications. Personnel
training programs and selection of in-use specialized tools and
equipment are controlled and verified by management to maintain
quality levels.
Minority Business Enterprise Certification
Terra-Mar has been certified as a qualified Minority Business
Enterprise (MBE) by the City of Dallas, Dallas County, City of
Houston, Harris County, the City of Austin, The Texas State
Highway Department and others.
