ST8505-CS 860506 COMMISSION ROBERT C. LANIER, CHAIRMAN THOMAS M. DUNNING RAY STOKER, JR. STATE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION P. O. Box 3067 Dallas, Texas 75221-3067 May 6, 1986 ENGINEER-DIRECTOR MARK G. GOODE Mr. Ed Powell City Manager P.O. Box 478 Coppell, Texas 75019 IN REPLY REFER TO FILE NO. Dear Mr. Powell: In reference to the proposed Belt Line Road improvements submitted to this office by Ginn Inc., we have reviewed the plans and offer the following comments. The improvements planned are reconstructing the existing 2 lanes to a six lane urban section, and transitioning to an existing 2-lane bridge at Belt Line Road and I.H. 635. This bridge will be submitted to be on the 10-Year Project Development and Control Plan. The bridge has approval requested by resolution from local municipalities including Dallas County, City of Coppell and City of Irving. The bridge was constructed in 1979, part of I.H. 635 construction, and is in very good condition. Therefore, total replacement of the bridge is not an attractive alternative. Due to increased traffic demands and the need to provide six continuous lanes over the bridge, it will need to be widened. In a meeting with Schrickel, Rollins & Association, City of Irving, City of Coppell, Ginn Inc., and SDHPT on February 4, 1986 in this office we discussed the widening of the bridge. It was pointed out by Mr. Van McElroy, Bridge Engineer for SDHPT, the bridge would have to be widened to the west due to vertical clearances. The future bridge design will be determined at a later date with several factors detemining the ultimate bridge width. Factors included would be median width, left turn lanes, shoulders, sidewalks, etc. Widening of the bridge will require additional right-of-way to be needed on the west side. The mount of right-of-way required would be related to the future bridge width. A reverse curve would need to be in the transition zone to match your proposed section with the future widening. However, if your alignment was shifted to the west it would lessen the severity of a reverse curve. Mr. Ed Powell May 6, 1986 Page 2 We would like you to be aware of these situations and would welcome your further comments. If you have any questions, please call Scott Young at 320-6157. Yours very truly, District Engineer
