The Sandy Lake Road project from Denton Tap to Coppell Road is progressing.
Once this project is complete the current 24 foot wide asphalt street will be replaced
with a 4 -lane divided thoroughfare with improved drainage and utilities. The
improvements will also include an 8 foot wide hike and bike trail on the south side
of the road, and a 5 foot wide sidewalk on the north side of the road.
Major benefits of this project include:
• Increased capacity for existing and future traffic flow. Improved traffic
flow.
• Increased pedestrian and bicycle safety through the addition of sidewalks
and signalized crossings.
• Connection of the new hike and bike trail with existing trails at South
Coppell Road and North Coppell Road.
• Installation of a traffic signal at South Coppell Road and Sandy Lake.
Installation of pedestrian signals at the signal light at Whispering Hills and
Sandy Lake.
• Elimination of drainage ditches on both sides of the road, and an improved
subsurface drainage collection system.
Scheduled activities as the project progresses:
• Continuing relocation of franchise utilities (gas, telephone, power,
communications). This work has already started, and will continue into the
fall.
• Removal of necessary trees to accommodate planned improvements. This
work will begin in May and be complete by June.
• The bidding process will take place this fall, and a contract for city
improvements will be awarded around the end of the year.
• Construction of City improvements will begin during the first quarter of
2012. Construction is anticipated to last approximately 12 months for the
portion from Denton Tap to South Coppell Road.
