Let me know if I can help. Paula Crocker Admin. Support Engineering Dept. 972/304 -3686 »> Teresa Mayfield <jegelewicz @yahoo.com> 07/05/05 2:19 PM »> Paula, Thank you so much for responding to my question. It makes sense that sidewalks are missing from vacant lots. My area of concern is along Denton Tap in front of the shopping center at Denton Tap and Sandy Lake (Southeast corner) and in front of the Coppell ISD building as well. I would like to be able to walk from my house, (Denton Tap and Bethel School) to the stores at Denton Tap and Sandy Lake, but I find it very difficult with these strips of missing sidewalk. What can I do to encourage sidewalk construction? Griffin, P.E., Director of Engineering/Public Works DATE: July 14, 2005 REF: Sidewalk leave -outs on Denton Tap Road In late 2001, the City received an inquiry concerning the missing pieces of sidewalk along the east side of Denton Tap Rd. An investigation was made and it was noted that over 3,000 linear feet of sidewalk was missing at various locations along the east side of Denton Tap Rd. (from Bethel Rd. to Parkway Blvd). The majority of these missing sections of sidewalk are adjacent to developments that took place in the 1980's. A cost was generated on what it would take to infill the missing sidewalk sections. Not only would the sidewalk need to be constructed, but there was also over 1,000 feet of wall that would need to be constructed, plus 22 accessibility ramps, the relocation of several business signs and over 100 linear feet of pedestrian handrail. The total cost generated in 2002 was over $250,000 to infill the missing sidewalk sections. The City currently does not have a program in place to construct new sidewalks adjacent to either undeveloped or developed properties. As new property has developed along Denton Tap Rd., we have required the construction of sidewalks. The most recent developments are: Vintage Car Wash, several banks along Denton Tap Rd. (south of Parkway Blvd.), Tom Thumb Shopping Center, and a hair salon at the corner of Bethel Rd. and Denton Tap Rd. A sidewalk is also being required of the developer adjacent to the Creme de la Creme, which is currently under construction. There has recently been some discussion concerning the formation of a new capital improvements committee to investigate the need for new construction projects. Currently, we are constructing projects that were identified by the previous capital improvements committee in 1999. If a new committee is formed to start investigating future construction projects, it is our intent to try to include some type of sidewalk infill project. While the sidewalk sections missing along Denton Tap Rd. are the most notable in Coppell, there are still other areas in the City where there is missing sidewalk sections. Several of these are located in subdivisions where vacant lots still exist. The current requirement is to have the builder construct the sidewalks at the time that the home is constructed. I hope this information has been helpful and if you do have any additional questions please contact me. cOPPELL Kenneth M.
