SC-New Tech HS-CS100827 (8/15/2011) Keith Marvin - Re: CrosswalksPage 1 From: Toby Bowen To: Per Birdsall CC: George Marshall; Keith Marvin Date: 8/27/2010 6:10 PM Subject: Re: Crosswalks Much more to the undertaking than I originally thought. Not sure as to the percentage, but I do know there is a large movement of kids across the street at the south end of the school when the bell rings...I would say double or more than use the existing walk. The new walk could be put starting at a driveway/sidewalk ramp, but a new ramp would likely have to be cut on the east side...ADA...doubt the existing would meet the requirements. It would be 100 feet or less from the existing flashers. >>> Per Birdsall 8/27/2010 3:09 PM >>> A crosswalk already exists in front of the school. If you are proposing an additional crosswalk, Engineering would be the place to start. We install and maintain crosswalks. The questions to contemplate is what percentage of students drive themselves to school versus walk/ride from east of the school utilizing the existing crosswalk? The original crosswalk was installed with elementary school kids walking to school. Where will the actual crosswalk be and are there existing ADA barrier free ramps at the location proposed? The existing ramps and driveways most likely do not meet current ADA requirements. The existing crosswalk is grand-fathered, I believe. I would only consider a location that would put the students directly in front of the school property where additional driveways could be avoided. How far from the school flasher will it be and will it need to be relocated? I'm sure there are more. A crosswalk must meet certain guidelines whereby declaring it an official route to school. As you can see it is not just a matter of installing signs and lines. This was probably more than you wanted to know and I will copy Engineering so we can begin to ponder the possibilities. I can't answer yet but as you can see it won't be quick unless the situation has already been investigated. Per >>> Toby Bowen 8/26/2010 4:30 PM >>> Quick question... I was contacted by a citizen who was concerned about the crossing situation at the New Tech High on Samuel. Many of the students park in the large lot on the south side of St Annes. It would seem by her description there are several folks who refuse to stop for the students crossing and there have been numerous near misses. She suggested a crosswalk at the location so the students can cross. My question would be, Who is responsible for that? Is it something the city would have to put in or would the school be responsible? If it is the school, I am happy to contact them and see what steps would need to be taken to have it installed. Thank you in advance for your help. Sergeant Toby Bowen 130 Town Center Blvd Coppell, TX 75019 972-304-3589
