I. Measure pipe diameter at 8 placm 45 clog. apxrt. Difference between minimum and maximum should not
exceed *(C) . If the difference is greater than {C), make corrections by rounding up thepipe with trench jacl~,
or suitable wooden post and wedges. Mainlain this rotredress until the joint iS made tap, and all torqueing
has been completed.

2. Pipe ends mt~t be cleail and rre of all oil, dirt, loose scale & rust. A thorough deaning with a wire brush
is recommended. AH wdds on pipe ends must be ground smooth.
ASSEMBLY~
I. Place a end ring on each pipe end. If the end ring(s) does not easil7 dip on pipe, correct pipe out-of-
rmmdness with jacks or posts as noted above in !.
'2. The gaskets should be cleaned and inspec___~ for any dantap ht shipment, and thin stretched over pipe
ends. It may he helpful Io wet the gaskets with wain' to make installation easier.
3. Place the center sleeve on one pipe end. Race gasket and other end dng on the other pipe end. Slide the
center sleeve into position and center over gap between Ihe two pipe ends.
4. XMI'ORTANT: The dearam betwere the OD of the pipe ends and the ID or the center aleeve and
end rlngs is to he distributed as eveoly as possible. No mm~llma l/$"g~or q-,~,t is mqmhilde. Wooden
wedges or plastic shims may he used. These __e~___ering aids my k removed after the coupling is assembled.
The wedges or shims must not project into the gasket pocket.
5. Be sure that Ihe gasket pocket in the end ring(s) is free from wood, dirt, metal or other ~dd debris.
6. Apply *flu soap to the gasket and center aleeve bevel face, and push gaskets into place. (In winter, use
ethylem~ glyeol mixture). *Pipe joint Lubwlcank Smeord Carp, Cmssdgn, NJ, or tquaL
7. Push end rings a~sins( Wasket, and rotat~ one end ring umil bolt holm line up.

2. Be certain that tim md ring(s) iS ~ Over the inter sleeve wlthom any interference. Xf necessary,
wedges may he used to free rig end ring(s) from the edg~ or the center delve.

3. On couplings 60~ and large:', 3 or 4 instailez~ can best tighten. Space the Instal|ers ~mlb~ around the
coupling, and lave all advance in the same direction as they lighten each ,rot. Be ctdain llmt the tnd ring
does not 'cock' as the nuts are tightreal. A tnv~ wreath. mmmt be mgd, Tighten to 30-35 foot
pounds all around, two or Ihree times, Increase Ihe wrmch setting to 40-50 foot pounds, and co"tlnue the
procedure to 75 foot pounds for 5/8' bolts and 90 foot pounds for 3/4" and larger belt At the maximum
tightness, go around the coupling several times to assure uniform gasket pressure.
4. BeJ'or~ final llghl~ming, jr'is good tedmlque to strfke each bolt bead with a light .sledge hammer to Rat
all parts.
5. AFfER FINAL TIGHTENING HAS BEEN COMPLETED. remove all pipe roundup material.
RETIGHTENING OF BOLTS: Arm- 24 hours, or jmt bcf'erc filling with water, it my be necmsary to check
the tigJ~ness of the boil:s, Follow Ihe Inkst torque _u,tii!lg as showit above.
