We have been trying for some time to gain approval from DART to complete the last 25 feet of
sidewalk that connects to the railroad crossing on Denton Tap. The issue is whether or not to install
pedestrian warning gates. DART acknowledges that pedestrian warning gates are not
required. However, now they want you, as City Manager, to sign a letter stating that the city will
install them in the future when transit service is developed on the Cottonbelt. The letter will commit
the city to perform the work at our sole cost.
I'm concerned about signing the letter from two viewpoints:
1) When transit is placed on the Cottonbelt, it seems that DART should be responsible for making
necessary improvements, including safety ones, to accommodate transit.
2) Signing the letter could be perceived as the city being aware of and approving the concept that the
Cottonbelt will not be grade separated at Denton Tap.
We have been unsuccessful in getting DART to modify their position. So, short of you signing the
letter, it seems we will be unable to complete the last 25 feet of the sidewalk.
