I actually had to use Acad 2010 to import the .dgn; must have been a newer version that 2007 couldn't
deal with.

Thank you, I will include this information in my plans. Do you have the last sheet of sign details in CAD?
That way I can just drop them into my design sheets?

George,
See attached chief engineer circular #12 regarding pedestrian crossings. You can forego pavement
parking and just do signs. Please let me know when you approach DART regarding the construction right
of entry or other agreements on this so I can expedite FWWR's review for you. Thank you for your
patience.

George
Since the install on Coppell road I have discussed the issue of sidewalk gates with several of my
counterparts and other traffic engineers as well as my senior management and have come to the
conclusion that liability issues should not be a concern as long as the sidewalk is in the close proximity to
the vehicle crossing (30' or less) Therefore I will only require pedestrian warning signs in either direction
on each sidewalk. and pavement markers as per the document you sent us in March of this year. Guido
will be doing a drawing on placement and will forward to you early next week.
Thanks for your patience with us on this relatively new issue to the FWWR.

What is the status of this sidewalk crossing? Are we going to have to install sidewalk gate arms and if so,
how much?

George - you mention below that you're planning to put the six-foot sidewalk at back of curb. I'm
confused now about whether you intend for the sidewalk to be between the existing gates/cantilevers and
back of curb or outside of the existing gates/cantilevers.

Guido,
I have not had any response from Mr. Burns. We need to get this resolved ASAP. We are already
working with TracWorks to have the roadway crossing repaired. They are going to replace the existing
rubber panels with concrete panels and extend them far enough to fit a 6' sidewalk behind the back of
curb. This is being done under a different project.
I had previously requested the use of a sign on the counter weight notifying pedestrians. Never received a
final approval or disapproval.

Hi George,
Please correspond with Mr. Eddie Burns, cc'd here, on the ped gate retrofit question for Denton Tap
Road. When you two have worked out the details Eddie can furnish me with a plan and estimate for the
Railroad to review and approve and then you and I can visit about an agreement. I've copied my boss,
Chief Engineer Ron Preuss too.
Thanks,

Guido,
FWWR is requesting the ped gates and not DART. I have confirmed this with them. As far as the surface
of the crossing. We have already started the process to try to replace all of the crossings throughout the
city. The one at Denton Tap will have concrete panels extended beyond the back of curb to allow a 6'
sidewalk pass.
As far as this gate arm issue I need to get it resolved quickly. I checked in the field, the existing gate arms
are Western Cullen Hayes model 3590. I also checked with the manufacturer, they make a gate arm kit
for that model. Can you please check with your contractor as far as how much it would cost to add this kit
to the existing gate arm. That way I can determine if the cost is worth the argument that these arms are
not necessary.
Thank You, George

Hello George,
I've reviewed the PDF you sent in addition to a DOT report in 2004 on the
topic and I've made recommendations to the Chief Engineer. He will be
reviewing the issue further. I would also suggest you contact Dallas Area
Rapid Transit (DART) since they own the right-of-way; DART may have
requirements that dictate. If you need help reaching the right person at
DART let me know.
Thank you,

Guido,
Please see the attached PDF at the bottom of page 15. We can also add a
warning surface prior to the crossing such as truncated domes. In other
areas I have also seen the use of railing/gates that shift pedestrians
around/ left to right prior to the crossing.
Thank You,
George

Mr. Marshall,
In addition to my comment below regarding pedestrian sidewalks please also
consider the railroad crossing surface. The poured-in-place sidewalk will
need to end at the edge of our railroad crossties on either side of the
track. Pedestrians will need to cross the railroad track on a
(11/8/2011) George Marshall - Fwd: RE: FW: Proposed sidewalk improvements,Page 6
DART/FWWR-approved surface including rubber or concrete panels. A standard
expansion joint can be used between the sidewalk and crossing surface.
Finally, don't forget that DART/FWWR will require railroad flagging when
your forces work within 25 feet of the center line of the railroad track.
I would suggest that you let me help you develop budget costs for pedestrian
gates, crossing surface and railroad flagging since the cost and lead time
is significant; my direct number is 682.429.2298.
Thank you,

Hi George. I've received comments back from Mr. Dan Guido and Mr. Dan
Carrizales. Their comments were (1) Pedestrian sidewalks should be
protected with pedestrian gates, whether pedestrian sidewalks are within the
roadway gates, or pedestrian gates are provided behind the mast and (2)
Flashing lights should be LED equipped.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call.
Thanks,
Shannon

Good afternoon men. This morning I met with the City of Coppell's Civil
Engineer, Mr. George Marshall, P.E.. The City has submitted proposed plans
for sidewalk improvements on the Cotton Belt Line, near Denton Tap Road.
Guido,
As I was researching my notes, I noticed that I've already received some of
your comments a few months back pertaining to pedestrian gates. During that
time, Graduate Engineer, Ms. Diwanna Baskins was the contacting person on
behalf of the City. Please submit any additional requirement that FWWR may
have. If not I will notify Mr. Marshall with the comments that I received
in your 8/31/09 e-mail (attached).
Dan,
Please forward me any comments that you may have. Particularly regarding
the signal boxes, wiring and wiring compatibility. The City said that they
may look at the possibilities of re-constructing the Denton Tap grade
crossing at a later date. I will forward you all a pdf copy of the drawings
as soon as I receive them from Mr. Marshall.
Meanwhile, please forward me your comments to review,

Hi George. It was a pleasure to meet with you this morning to discuss the
City of Coppell's sidewalk improvement project. It appears that the City
does have an existing agreement (attached) from the predecessing railroad.
I will include you on my e-mail that I will be sending to Fort Worth &
Western Railroad's, Assistant Engineer, Mr. Daniel "Guido" Guido, and DART's
Chief Engineer, Mr. Daniel Carrizales, regarding the pedestrian gates and
any other requirements
Please be sure to complete the application and checklist that I exchanged
with you this morning. Upon receiving both forms and the $2,500
"Engineering Review and Application Fee", I will begin the process. The
review process takes approximately 4-5 weeks to complete, from the time that
I receive the information. Pending your approval, I will prepare the
license for the new improvements.
Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.
Best regards,
Shannon D. Gray
