Safety is paramount — in designing pedestrian crossings, provide adequate room for pedestrian refuge. Designs should avoid having pedestrians wait between sets of tracks or between a parallel roadway and tracks. All pedestrian crossings must include an agreement filed with the Fort Worth & Western Railroad. To request a pedestrian crossing, request an application, which must be submitted completed, including the required application fee and an exhibit showing the horizontal alignment of the proposed crossing, a description of the pedestrian way surface across the right -of -way, and indicate placement and type of any signage to be used. Pedestrian crossings should cross the right -of -way at approximately 90 degrees to the track center line. A pedestrian crossing can cross in front of or behind the gate of an active warning crossing. Crossing approaches must remain at the same grade as the crossing surface for at least 5 feet off the end of the crossing panels. Crossing approach pavement should meet municipal standards, for width and construction, across the entire right -of -way except the crossing panel section. Pedestrian crossing — surface The preferred crossing surface where a pedestrian way crosses the track section is concrete panels. Alternatives that will be considered are rubber or timber. Asphalt is not an option because passing trains vibrate the asphalt enough to break it up and cause footing hazards. Pedestrian crossing panels must include flangeway filler. Pedestrian crossing surface must extend at least to the limits of the sidewalk. An expansion joint, typical of municipal projects, where two pavements are adjoining, must be installed between concrete, rubber or timber panels and the approach sidewalk pavement. Pedestrian crossing surface must not impede drainage and must not interfere with active warning device crossings. A minimum of one foot of open space must be maintained between active warning device mast base and pedestrian crossing pavement. The concrete panels are typically going to be placed before pedestrian way paving is placed. Crossing surface to be installed by F W WR contract forces. Page 2 of 3 (7/21/2010) George Marshall - FWWR -12 - pedestrian crossings.pdf Page 4 Pedestrian crossing — signage Pedestrian crossings shall include a sign warning pedestrians of train traffic. One sign is required for each quadrant, facing away from the tracks so pedestrians can see the signs as they approach the crossing. There are two options to choose from. FWWR's preferred sign vendor can provide affordable signs based on the FWWR pedestrian sign specification. Signs to be installed by municipal forces only in coordination with the Chief Engineer (to protect non - railroad personnel in the right -of -way from train traffic).
