Dear Mr. Denton:
APR 16 1999
TEY'A$ HISTORICAL COwrsc —
WAY a 'I 1999
A little over a week ago, we played phone tag with regard to a proposed ,
improvement project in the City of Coppell. I had been asked to submit a prop
an archaeological survey of the proposed route, but after reviewing the old and new
USGS maps of the area [enclosed], and based on our recent work in Carrollton and
Coppell, it is my opinion that a cultural resources survey of the road project is
unnecessary for the following reasons:
First, the road project will be confined within the existing road corridor of Coppell Road
which was constructed many years ago[shows on the 1936 Dallas County map], and the
City is only going to widen the present road, not acquire new property. Second, the land
adjacent to the road project was previously mined for sand and gravel, and although site
4 1 DL I I was located nearby, there is no reason to expect that undisturbed site deposits
are buried under the road. You will note that the areas surrounding the road were mined
as shown on the 1959 map (Figure 1) that was photorevised in 1968 and 1973. Without
this set of maps, if we went on the basis of the 1959 map that was photorevised in 1981
(Figure 2), we would not know that the land immediately west of the word "ROAD" had
been mined, and has since been reclaimed. Consequently, it is my recommendation that
an archaeological survey of the existing road corridor is unwarranted. I would appreciate
your response to my letter so I can advise the City of Coppell or you can directly contact
Ken Griffin at 972- 304 -3686 in Coppell.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
oj
