We are requesting a variance from the use of a lime or cement treated subgrade for the suppoA of
reinforced concrete parking areas as contained in The City of Coppell Subdivision Regulations,
Appendix C, Section (I)(E)(1)~). The following summarizes our design parameters for the design of
the parking area for the above referenced commercial site.
Briefly, "select fill" material will be needed to bring the final finish elevation of the top of pavement
to the required level. The "select fill" material, as specified in our paving plan (Paving Plan, dated
March 3, 1998) is to consist of a sandy-clay material (SC classification) with a plastic index of 15
(P.I. < 15) or less. Since the P.I. of the "select fill" subgrade would be less than or equal to 15, the
introduction of lime into the subgrade would not effectively react with the clay molecules to reduce
the P.I. lower than the stated level. Our soil data and paving design parameters are outlined in the
mentioned paving design plan.
Based on our analysis of the subgrade "select fill" material and the natural soil subbase, we are
requesting that the suppoK soil material (subgrade) for the new parking area not be treated with
either lime or cement.
We advise that the "select fill" material must be compacted in eight (8) inch lifts to 95% densi~ of
Standard Proctor in accordance with A.S.T.M. D-698, as specified in the mentioned paving plan
document. The contractor must employ the se~ices of a geotechnical laborato~ to veri~ the
required level of compaction of each lift.
