RE: Consider award of a drainage improvements and water service
replacement (WA06-02) project in the amount of $32,350 to Canary
Construction, Inc.; as provided in DUD funds.
Over the last two weeks engineering staff has met with several contractors to solicit
pricing for the referenced project. We received three quotes ranging from $32,350.00 to
$65,165.00. The lowest price was from Canary Construction, based here in Coppell.
This project consists of the extension of 272 feet of storm drain line, the installation of
two inlets, and the abandonment of an old 2" water line. This work is being done in the
Stringfellow Addition south of Sandy Lake Road, west of Moore Road. See the attached
exhibits for more detail on the location and scope of work.
City staff has been working towards the resolution of two problems in this area since
2006. The first problem is the existence of the old 2" water line. This line previously fed
as many as four homes in the area, however due to redevelopment it now serves only one
home at 117 S. Moore. This project will eliminate this line and put a new service under
Moore Road to serve the existing home.
The other problem is drainage. The construction of Nash Manor southwest of this
location, and the redevelopment of the properties surrounding 117 S. Moore have strained
the drainage ditch along the west side of this property. When the Nationwide Insurance
building was Constructed in 2006 we had them extend a drainage pipe to their south
property line to try to pick up this water, with limited success. This project will extend
an 18" drainage pipe 272 feet to pick up the balance of the water.
Canary Construction has done work both in and for the City of Coppell previously. They
have the equipment and personnel to complete this project, and we recommend award of
this contract to them in the amount of $32,350.
