Completion Date: On-going Bauer Built owns and operates several stations and convenience store gas stations. Bauer Built began upgrading their petroleum storage tanks in response to the new federal petroleum storage tank law in November, 1988. Ayres has provided site assessments and evaluations at various Bauer Built facilities. Work performed for Bauer Built includes three tank closure site assessments, a site evaluation involving soil and groundwater sampling at a bulk petroleum storage fa. cility and a soil and groundwater evaluation at a former tire store and service station. ASSOCIATES Groundwater Contamination Assessment at a Truck Stop Client: American International Adjustments Co. Completion Date: 1989 Several solvents and gasoline constituents (BETX compounds) were discovered and parties potentially responsible for the contamination were ordered to investigate further. Ayres Associates was retained by American International Adjustments Company, insurer of the truck stop, to perform a groundwater study to determine if gasoline contamination was originating from that site. Ayres' study included installing off- site monitoring wells to supplement monitoring wells already in the area. Groundwater samples collected from the new wells, in addition to five existing wells and a private well, were analyzed for BETX compounds. Additionally, eight soil borings were taken around underground storage tanks (UST's) and distribution piping to identify potential sources of contamination. Soil samples were screened for organic vapors using a portable flame ionization detector. This work revealed a water table plume contaminated with BETX compounds, apparently originating at the truck stop site. Although no active source was found, historical records contained reports of several gas pump/car accidents that caused spills. Remediation recommendations included installing a recovery well and groundwater treatment system, pressure testing of UST's and distribution piping, remediation of contaminated soil and vapor monitoring of residences in the pathway of the plume. ASSOCIATES Remediation of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks Client: Marshall & Isley Trust Company Completion Date: 1988 Ayres Associates consulted with the M & I Trust Company regmding a former gas station site. Two underground gasoline storage tanks had been removed from an abandoned gas station. At the time of excavation, the tanks were observed to be in excellent physical condition and no potential leaks were evident. However, composite samples of soil and groundwater indicated low levels of contamination by compounds associated with petroleum products. Ayres conducted an assessment for potential contamination of the area surrounding the leaking tank and prepared a remedial action plan. Based on the levels of contamination observed, background conditions and potential risk to the community an effective remedial action plan was implemented to reduce contamination levels to acceptable limits. ASSOCIATES Remediation of Leaking Above Ground Storage Tank Client: Confidential Client Completion Date: On-going In November 1988, 6,200 gallons of #2 fuel oil leaked from a 10,000 gallon above ground storage tank at the client's facility. The spill was reported to the regulatory agency which required the client to investigate the extent of soil and groundwater contamination and implement remediation work if necessary. Ayres Associates was retained to investigate the spill site. Ayres installed monitoring walls and collected soil and groundwater samples for analysis of fuel oil constituents. The investigation revealed up to 3.5 feet of #2 fuel oil in the ground water over a quarter acre area. Based on the investigative findings remediation was advised. Ayres designed and installed a recovery system for fuel oil. The recovery system includes a 12-inch diameter recovery well and a 2-pump recovery system. The 2-pump system includes a groundwater depression pump and product collection pump. Fuel oil is plumped to an on-site storage tank. The system began operation in late April 1989. As of late August 1989, approximately 3,000 gallons of fuel oil have been recovered. ASSOCIATES UST STAFF ASSOCIATES Underground Storage Tank Staff Philip J.
