Re: 1.5 MG Elevated Tank -- Coppell, Texas
Dear Mr. Pippett:
Reference February 2, 1987, letter from Mr. Abram DeVaul, P.E.,
Pitt-Des Moines, Inc., regarding inlet/outlet pipe, we offer the
following comments.
Since what is being proposed is a changed condition from that
which is shown on the plans, we need to receive additional
information prior to construction review and approval.
The sketch provided by Mr. DeVaul is not an accurate depiction
of actual field conditions, as it now exists. We requested
engineering calculations be provided identifying the forces to
be restrained along with your recommendations as to how those
forces will be restrained. Any combination of retainer glands,
concrete thrust blocks and/or tie rods should be shown along
with calculations.
The information provided us on the "Megalug" joint restraint
does not address anything more than deflection of joints. No
information was provided on bends. In order to properly
evaluate what you are proposing, we need additional information,
including calculations indicating adequate thrust restraint is
being provided.
In summary, it appears that the restrained system, that is in
place at this time, could possibly work. We have no objections
to the use of the concrete thrust block at the 90 degree bend,
the "Megalug" retainer glands, or the 8-3/4" diameter all-thread
rods, separately or all in combination; but, we need to have
back-up material to justify the proposed changes. As soon as
this information is provided, we will continue construction
review on this portion of the project.
Sincerely,
Gabe Favre
