Hub 05 ~O~~Fl Date: 8126199 12:58PM Subject: Re: Deforest Lift Station Dear Ms. Wright: The deodorizer we currently use is what is known as a "floater". It creates a film on top of the raw sewage and prevents the odors from escaping through the vents. It does not mask the odor with something that smells better. There are many different types of deodorizers on the market. We have experimented with most of them and have found that this one works the best. It should last six months or more. We have never gone that long without replacing it. When the lift station is working properly, it will always leave several feet of sewage in the wet well including the floater. The lift station sensor will malfunction occasionally and suck the wet well dry including the "floater". When the sensor does malfunction, we replace the floater. It occurs about every two or three months on average. In order to help solve the odor problem, I have instructed the crew to add the deodorizer at the beginning of each month and whenever the sensor malfunctions. We will try this for several months and see if it will solve the odor problem. If you continue to experience bad odor problems, please contact me and be sure to include the time of day the problem existed. This will help us to determine if there are other problems besides the deodorizer. We are currently in the process of choosing a consultant to design the upgrade to the station. Once the consultant begins designing the new station, we will look at all of the odor control methods currently available and determine which one will best suit our needs. I am sure you will be much happier with the new station. Until that time, we will try to keep the odor to a minimum. If you have any further comments or questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Glenn D. Hollowell, P.E. Assistant Director of Public Works City of Coppell >>> "CandE Wright" <cwright@tatumcfo.com> 08/25/99 01:24PM >>> Glenn- As you can see I am copying in my husband who will be dealing with you on this---but a few comments. First, I am not sure how you keep up with complaints on the Lift Station but I know that we have sent over 25 letters and faxes and I know that the people who live down wind from the station have called in the past---from my perspective, ours alone should be consider a lot! Secondly, I would like to know what steps must be taken by us to ensure that the deodorizer is put on a pro-active schedule rather than a reactive schedule (i.e. petition, letters, bring it to the Council???) I consider the current process an inadequate solution and something needs to change. As far as what will be done in the future, I will let my husband address as to its effect or lack of effect on the "quality of living" in our area when the changes occur. I appreciate your response and please forward messages to both of us. Thank you. CandE Wright cwri.qht~,tatumcfo.com .... Original Message ..... From: Glenn Hollowell <~hollow~.ci.coppell.tx.us> To: <cwri~lht~,tatumcfo.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 1999 8:42 AM Subject: Deforest Lift Station Dear Mr. Wright: We added deodorizer to the lift station on Monday, August 23,1999, after we received a copy of your fax to Ken Griffin. We do not have a set schedule for adding deodorizer to the lift station. The lift stations are checked every morning and we add deodorizer if we perceive there is an odor problem. We also investigate complaints about odor problems when we receive them. We have had very few complaints about odors at this station. We are scheduled to enlarge the Deforest Lift Station this winter. We will expand the capacity of the station by converting the dry well to a wet well and moving all of the electronics above ground. The consultant that designs this expansion will make reccommendations on controlling the odor problem. We will investigate all of the options and determine what will be the best odor control for this station. There have been many new technoligies developed in odor control since this station was first installed. If you have further questions regarding this matter, do not hesitate to call me at (972) 304-3545. Sincerely, Glenn D. Hollowell
