CF-Village-CS 890414GINN, INC. CONSULTING ENGINEERS Mr. Howard Paffo ,~Water Utilities Supervisor ~ ' City of Coppell 1 Re: Vfllage Parkway Pump Station Gate Valves Dear Mr. Pafford: t~ f t4~ 6 ~4 r We have received your 4/10/89 memo along with a copy of the 1986 letter from American Darling Valve Company. Our understanding from previous conversations was that American Darling would supply stainless steel body bolts on all gate valves furnished for use in the City of Coppell. Per the wording of the letter, it appears American Darling's intention was to supply stainless steel body bolts only when specifically requested. The Contract Documents for this project contain no specific provisions requiring the use of stainless steel body bolts on gate valves. The American Darling valves submitted appear to comply with the applicable AWWA and technical specifications for this project. Based on this information and your direction, the American Darling valves were approved on 3/16/89 with a notation reminding American Darling of the City's desire to have stainless steel body bolts. Since that time, American Darling through Cajun Contractors, Inc. has requested an additional $2,168 to provide the requested bolts. We do not believe the City has the contractual right to require submittal of a different valve manufacturer at this time; therefore, if you still feel the stainless bolts are justified, please submit a request for a change order. We wish to note that we see no benefit from requiring stainless steel bolts on valves with cast iron bodies. Dissimilar metal corrosion will utilize the valve body as a sacrificial anode and gall the threads creating future maintenance problems. The standard cadmium plated steel bolts will act as an anode for the valve body, thus lengthening the valve life at less cost to the City. Please review this matter and provide us direction as soon as possible. We have been advised by Cajun that these valves are scheduled for immediate production. This issue must be resolved or shipment and construction schedules will be impacted. Please contact us if you have any questions. Sincer~y, Sanf~6~d W. Case, P.E. attachments cc: Russell Doyle, P.E. E. R: Village Pkwy Pump Station Gentlemen: Cajun Contractors, Inc. has reviewed your comments on the gate valve submittal for the above referenced project and must make the following comments. Your comments required American Darling to use stainless steel bolts on the valve body. Upon thorough review of the specifications, Cajun can find no such requirement. Unless we have overlooked this requirement in the Contract documents, this work would be an extra to the Contract. Should the Owner choose to have stainless steel bolts, Cajun proposes to provide them on the buried gate valves for an additional cost of $2,168.00. Your cooperation in clarifying this matter with the Owner and responding to us at your earliest convenience shall be appreciated. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
