Box 540487 Dallas, Texas 75354-0487 Re: Village Parkway Pump Station City of Coppell, Texas Surge Valve Dear Mr. Hirschey: We have received and reviewed your submittal for the 12" surge relief valve on this project. Prior to releasing this submittal, we would like to investigate the possibility of modifying the surge system on the pump station. The system as designed and bid is a surge relief system. This type of valve will open only in the event of an over pressure condition. A surge anticipator valve will open in advance of the surge wave, thus allowing a smaller valve to dissipate a surge before the over pressure condition occurs. Please provide us with a proposal to substitute a 12" Cla-Val Model 652-03 Surge Anticipator Valve for the 12" Surge Relief Valve. It should be noted that this surge anticipator valve has a 12" body with 10" internals and meets the required Cv- Upon receipt of your proposal, we will evaluate the benefits and cost differential (if any) and forward the matter to the City of Coppell for their consideration and possible issuance of a change order. Please call if you have any questions. Sincerely, Sanford W. Case, P.E. Project Manager cc: Russell Doyle, P.E.~ Steve Goram H. Wayne Ginn, P.E. Gabe Favre J.R. When pumping systems are started and stopped gradually, harmful surges do not occur. However, should a power fail- ure take place, the abrupt stopping of the pump can cause dangerous surges in the system which could result in severe equipment damage. The 652-03 Surge Anticipator Valve is designed to be used in a pumping system to prevent excessive surge pressure in the event of power failure. Power Failure to a pump will usually result in a down surge in pressure followed by an up surge in pressure. The surge control valve opens on the initial Iow pressure wave, diverting the returning high pressure wave from the system. In effect, the valve has anticipated the re- turning high pressure wave and is open to dissipate the dam- age causing surge. The valve will then close slowly without generating any further pressure surges. Typical Applications The 652-03 Surge Anticipator is installed to sense the pump ~ CLA-VAL PUMP discharge line, dissipating surges to atmosphere.
