Based on our review of the Contract Documents, plans, and inspectors log, we are able to substantiate a total of 296.5 VLF of 18" drilled piers above plan quantities for the 32 foundation piers. Therefore, our recommendation to the Owner is for a Change Order in the following amount: 296.5 VLF @ $24.25/VLF $7,190.13 Bonds & Insurance (+2%) 143.80 Subtotal $7,333.93 Cajun (i 5%) 1,100.07 Total Change Order $8,434.00 If you concur with the above, please sign all six (6) copies of the Change Order and return them to our office. We will then forward them to the City of Coppeli for their consideration. Please note that the Contract Documents require that claims of this nature be submitted in writing within thirty (30) days of the occurrence. Future claims that fail to meet the required submittal deadline may be denied on this basis. Sincerely, . Project Manager .... attachments Iii '" cc: Russell Doyle, P.E. Steve Goram H. RE: Village Pkwy Pump Station Coppell, Texas Gentlemen: In accordance with our previous discussion, Cajun Contractors, Inc. has completed drilling and placing the 18" drilled piers beneath the pump station base slab at the above referenced project. To complete this activity, Cajun was required to drill to an elevation deeper than that shown on the Contract Drawings in order to encounter suitable material. The Contract Specifications Section 2377, Article 2.2, states "the depths and elevations shown in the Drawings indicate the expected location of satisfactory material and will be used as the basis for the Contract". Drawing S1, Sheet 17 of 46, illustrates a typical pier detail. This detail indicates approximately 18 VLF must be drilled pri'or to encountering unweathered shale (suitable material), into which a minimum penetration of 8 VLF must be drilled. Consequently, the approximate total drilling depth of 26 VLF was to be used as the basis for the Contract. The exact depths drilled at each pier are listed on the attached sheet. The actual, average depth drilled prior to encountering the unweathered shale was approximately 27.5 VLF. Therefore, an additional 9.5 VLF per pier was drilled in order to encounter the shale and initiate the 8 VLF penetration. Specification Section 2377, Article 2.2 states "the Contract price will be adjusted in accordance with the Contract conditions relative to changes in the work". Given these above conditions, and in accordance with Section 6 of ! Ginn, Incorporated Page two Work and Claims", Cajun Contractors, Inc. respectfully requests a change order in the amount of $ 9,230.00 as compensation for the above described additional work. Summary cost breakdown is listed below. Additional Drilled Pier Drillin~ MK Construction 324.5 VLF @ 24.25/VLF $7,869.00 Bonds and Insurance 157.00 Subtotal $8,026.00 Cajun Contractors, Inc. - 15% 1.204.00 Total Change Order Cost $9,230.00 Your review of and response to this request at your earliest convenience shall be appreciated. DIVISION 2 - BITEWOI~ PAGE SECTION 02377 - DRILLED PIERS 02377-3 P]~RT 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 CONSTRUCTION OF DRILLED PIERS A. Steel Cage Fabrication: 1. Place the cage of reinforcing steel, consisting of longitudinal bars and spiral reinforcement, as a completely assembled unit immediately prior to concrete placement. 2. If the shaft is lengthened, extend a minimum of one- half of the spiral reinforcement to the bottom. Lap splice (20 diameters) or provide continuous bars without splices extending the full drilled shaft depth. Ail splices required shall be in the lower portion of the shaft. 3. Tie spiral reinforcement to the longitudinal bars at a spacing not to exceed twelve inches. 4. Brace the cage to prevent racking and in such a manner as to not interfere with the tremie. B. Steel Cage Placement: 1. Support the cage from the top of the shaft to prevent it from slumping downward during concrete placement and extraction of the casing. The support shall be concentric with the cage to prevent racking and distortion of the steel. 2. Support a minimum of one-half of the vertical bars. 3. In uncased shafts, use concrete spacer blocks or steel chairs at sufficient intervals to insure concentric spacing for the entire length of the cage. 4. In cased shafts: a. Do not use concrete spacer blocks in cased shafts. b. Place metal "chair" type spacers or bent pieces of steel bars at sufficient intervals around the steel cage to insure concentric spacing inside the casing. GINN, INC. Place concrete continuously in the shaft to the construction joint shown on the Drawings. 4. Place concrete through a suitable tube or tremie to prevent segration of materials. a. The tube or tremie shall be made in sections to provide proper discharge and permit raising it as the placement progresses. b. Nonjointed pipe may be used if sufficient openings of the proper size are provided to allow for the flow of concrete into the shaft. c. Do not use aluminum tubes or tremies. D. Casing Removal: 1. The elapsed time from the beginning of concrete placement in the cased portion of the shaft until extraction of the casing is begun shall not exceed one hour. 2. Do not start removal of casing until casing is completely filled with concrete. 3. When unusual conditions warrant, the casing may be pulled in partial stages. 4. Maintain a sufficient head of concrete above the bottom of the casing to overcome hydrostatic pressure. 5. Casing extraction shall be at a slow, uniform rate with the pull in line with the center of the shaft. E. Inspection of Steel Cage: 1. Check the elevation of the top of the steel cage before and after casing extraction. GINN, INC.
