Local group blazes trail Continued from page 5 "This trail is in accordance with our City of C..oppel hike-and-bike master plan, said Dennis Slayton, Leisure Ser.v. ices superintendent for Coppell. It came into existence in 1994. It's a dedicated off-'f6'iid hike-and-bike system." Approximately 50 yards of the trail had already been cleared two ears ago as part of an Eagle Scout roject. The current project is cutting through the tree line along the Elm Fork of the Trinity, which hugs the no,rt~ edge of Brown Park East. Thelocals here refer to it as · Denton Creek," said Slayton, "but it's actually the Elm Fork of the Trinity." Startin$ approximately one quarter mzle from Denton Tap Road, the trail blaz .e!'s began dear- ing a path four-feet wide and seven-feet tall through the thick brush along the creek. No mature trees were cut down, So the path winds through large oak, elm and at Brown Park East a few redbud trees providing na- ture lovers with a serene setting for a not-so-rugged hike. ' Along the path, wooden stair- ways and bridges are built to make steep sections more acces- sible. When completed the path will. join Brown Park East to Brown Paris West. "Over at Brown Park West there's a 12-foot-wide, concrete hike-and-bike svstem," said Slayton.' "It will go through Brown West and will tie into Brown East under the bridge." Trail blazers continued on the project on May 3 with help from the community. Once the trail .surface has been cleared," explained Slayton, "the next phase was to put in a natural trail surface--mulch. We get it from the Christmas trees that Wer. e recycled, and from trees and limbs that have been trimmed in the area." VEHICLE INSPECTION DUE?
