In response to JDK’s change order request below for Unit A1, Pay Item 6 - Unclassified Channel Excavation, I offer the
following:
Given that we have topographic survey for the lake bottom within the grading limits, I would expect the plans quantity
to be fairly accurate. That said, the change order quantity suggested below for Unit A1 appears to coincide fairly closely
with the volume of spoil to be expected as part of the wall construction (1,000 CY change vs. 1,120 calculated). If
structural excavation is in fact the reason for the change order then the following specification items indicate this is not
a valid change order request.
NCTCOG Item 701.2 (Structural Excavation) states…“Structural excavation shall be considered subsidiary to each
bid item for which structural excavation is necessary.”
Pay Item Description 6 (Unclassified Channel Excavation) states …”The plans quantity was calculated based on
the difference of the existing grade and proposed grade around the lake edge (in front of wall face) and along
the canal (between wall faces).
Pay Item Description 9 (Construct Concrete Segmental Retaining Wall) states…”This work includes the complete
in place construction of…wall.”
The volume of structural excavation should be similar to the volume of structural backfill, since much of the wall is
located at the pre-project lake edge. Approximate calculations for the volume of structural backfill are shown on the
attached PDF.
