RE: TEA-21 Projects
Dear Mr. Cranford:
This letter is written in response to the letter from Dallas County concerning the County
funding 20% of various projects shown on the Regional Thoroughfare Plan as published by the
North Central Texas Council of Governments.
Based on the Regional Thoroughfare Plan, a portion of Sandy Lake Road is eligible for
funding. Sandy Lake Road, between I-35 and HWY 121, is a major east-west thoroughfare that
now provides increased traffic to the Grapevine Mills Development in Grapevine. Currently,
the City of Coppell has the portion between Denton Tap and MacArthur Boulevard under
construction and Dallas County has the bridge over the Elm Fork of the Trinity River under
construction. Dallas County also has the portion between MacArthur and the Elm Fork within
the City of Coppell and the portion between the Elm Fork and I-35 within the City of
Carrollton under design. Both of those projects are anticipated to go to construction in the near
future. The only missing link between I-35 and HWY 121 is the portion between Denton Tap
west to HWY 121. That stretch currently exists as a two-lane asphalt roadway with a length of
approximately 11,000 linear feet. The Coppell Thoroughfare Plan shows it to be constructed
as a four-lane divided arterial in the future. This project is being considered for a future bond
election. Therefore, the City of Coppell is committing to the 20% participation at this time.
However, if during your evaluation of the submitted projects a higher percentage would cause
this project to be viewed favorably for funding, the City of Coppell would request that we be
contacted and offered the opportunity to provide a higher participation amount.
The following represents the required basics concerning this project:
Project Name: West Sandy Lake Road
Location: City of Coppell, Dallas County
Limits: Denton Tap Road west to State HWY 121
Brief Project Scope: To replace West Sandy Lake Road from its' current two-lane asphalt
roadway configuration to a four-lane divided boulevard with improved
drainage.
Estimated Total Cost of the Project: 6.8 million dollars
City's Commitment: 20%
If any additional information is needed or required, please feel free to contact me at your
convenience.
Sincerely,
