RE: Denton Creek Flood Control Channel Erosion
Dear Mr. Griffin,
On January 1, 2012, Denton County Levee Improvement District No. 1 (the "District"))
hired Halff Associates, Inc. as their new engineers for the District. In order for Halff to
become more acquainted with the District's facilities and operation and maintenance
responsibilities, a site visit by Halff Associates' engineers and the District's operator was
conducted on January 17, 2012.
During this site visit, Halff noticed several locations between MacArthur Boulevard and
Denton Tap Road, where erosion is starting to undermine slope end sections of pipes
that outfall into the flood control channel (photos attached). For scale, the engineer
that conducted the site visit is standing next to a couple of the more severe erosion
locations. A section of a flume near Denton Tap Road has failed (photo attached)due to
the erosion. While the District did install several flumes as part of its reclamation plan
back in 1985, none of the items addressed herein were installed by the District.
Installation of these drainage structures were part of the development(s)to the north of
the flood control channel. At the time of the site visit, Half was not aware that these
structures did not belong to the District.
Based on Halff's site visit, an inventory needs list with preliminary cost estimates was
developed. One of the major items on the list was the repair of the erosion occurring at
these outfalls.
,,',,,,s.,,,,?o The erosion and failure at these structures has been communicated to the City of
Coppell (the "City") in the past, but responses have never been received on the matter.

Failure to take action could potential lead to more costly repairs in the future for both
the City and the District. We respectfully request that the City work with the District on
addressing these erosion issues.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at (713) 850-9000 or THE
District's engineer, Russell Erskine at 214-346-6245. The next scheduled meeting for the
District is set for March 27, 2012, at 11 am at 3049 Lake Vista Drive, Lewisville, Texas.
We look forward to working with you on the erosion issue.
Sincerely,
Sanford Kuhl Hagan Kugle Parker Kahn LLP
