For any trench excavations exceeding five(5')feet in depth, the contractor shall conform to current OSHA standards for excavations, trenching, and shoring. 2. Trench safety details shown are for general trenching installation. If details shown are not feasible due to specific field conditions, contractor shall notify engineer immediately for alternate design. 3. Design slopes shown herein reflect maximum slopes allowable by OSHA and engineer design. Contractor shall consult engineer if slopes shown are not feasible. 4. Trenches are designed for short term use(less than 24 hours). If field conditions change due to rain, water seepage into trench walls, or any other potentially hazardous situation, contractor shall inspect or contact engineer for evaluation. 5. Trench boxes or other approved shoring devices shall be installed from outside the trench by starting at the top of the trench working down. Cross members such as beams or jacks must be placed 90 degree angles to box walls in a true horizontal position. Removal shall begin at the bottom of the trench working up. 6. When using a trench box or other shoring device, workers shall remain in the confines of the device while performing duties within the trench to avoid potential injury or loss of life. 7. Per OSHA, soils are classified into four groups based on unconfined compressive strength; solid rock, Type A (greater than 3,000 psf), Type B (1,000-3,000 psf), or Type C (less than 1,000 psf). When in doubt assume soil type to be Type C. 8. Contractor shall provide an access (i.e. ladder)for every 25 horizontal feet of travel within trench. 9. Spoil materials shall be kept a minimum of two (2') feet from trench edge. 10. Contractor shall consult with engineer regarding alternative design procedures and methods. 11. Shoring and other safety mechanisms should be frequently inspected for any damage. Any damaged components or systems shall be immediately replaced. 12. For trench depths greater than 20' in depth, contractor shall verify with manufacturer that depth in question is consistent with the manufacturer's tabulated data, specifications, recommendations, and limitations per OSHA Option 2, under §1926.652(c)(2). Based on 12 foot maximum depth and information provided by the Contractor/Client, it is determined that soils on the project site primarily consist of stiff clays to be considered as Type B material. Limestone is typically found in the area as well. However, limestone often contains fissures and cavities filled with clay thus limiting its strength and stability. Trench wall slopes (V:H)are noted as 1:H where: H = 3/4 (Type A soils) H = 1 (Type B soils) H = 1 % (Type C soils) Open Cut methods are suitable in most install applications. Alternate sections for hydraulic shoring and trench box/shield applications are also shown and to be used at F-10826 the Contractor's discretion. Manufacturer's specifications for hydraulic shoring, trench box/shield, slide rails, or any other"standard" shoring device should always be reviewed for limitations prior to use. ; RCP, It TRENCH SAFETY PLAN EASTLAKE ADDI1 ION-COPPEI..I.,'IX DRAWN BY SCALE DATE PROJ.
