This simple, sturdy device saves tax dollars and the environment. Manhole covers are a major contributor to rainfall induced I&I. Test indicate that a leaky manhole cover under only one-inch of water will allow an inflow rate of .20 to 7.5 gallons per minute. While the problem of leaky manhole covers is one of the leading contributors to system I&I, ironically, it is the easiest and most cost-effective problem to remedy. INFLOWSHIELD® manhole cover inserts are custom sized, and manufactured from 18 gauge 304 stainless steel. This superior construction provides superior durability and strength that far exceeds that of plastic inserts. I Stainless Steel Most importantly, INFLOWSHIELD® inserts can be installed "in-house", utilizing your own collection system maintenance personnel. i P.O.Box 1047 Largo,Florida 33779-1047 Intl owShield Tel: (568)3354646 Fax: (727)531.1089 info>,InflowShield.com Materials and Design The insert and components shall be manufactured of materials resistant to corrosion from atmospheres containing hydrogen sulfide and dilute sulfuric acid. The Insert The insert body shall be manufactured of 304 Stainless Steel with a thickness of not less than 18 gage. The insert shall have a deep-dish bowl design to allow for easy removal of manhole cover. The depth of the insert shall be such that the manhole lid will not come into contact with the insert during removal and replacement of the lid, (i.e., lid rotation). The insert shall be designed to provide a sufficiently loose fit into the manhole frame to allow easy removal. The Gasket The gasket shall be made of closed cell neoprene and shall have a pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side. The gasket shall have a minimum thickness of 1/8 inch. The Handle The insert shall have a handle made of 3/16 plastic coated 304 stainless steel cable installed on the side of the bowl. The handle shall be attached with two 304 stainless steel round head bolts with flat washers and self-locking nuts. The handle is able to withstand a pull of 500 pounds of force before it fails or separates from the insert. Installation The manhole frame rim shall be free of all dirt and debris prior to the installation of the insert. This can be accomplished by scraping the rim with a sharp chisel to remove the heavy debris and finish cleaning with a wire brush. The insert should be fully seated around the manhole frame rim to insure against water seepage between the insert and the manhole frame rim. Maintenance The insert gasket should be inspected on a least an annual basis to insure that the gasket has not become worn or displaced. Worn or missing gaskets must be replaced in insure the effectiveness of the insert and protect the insert body from undue wear.
