I wanted to contact you and give you an update on your request for a crosswalk across Sandy Lake Road. The city gave
this request a great deal of consideration, and we have decided that the best approach was to build a sidewalk leading
from a controlled crossing at Whispering Hills to Oak Trail on the north side of Sandy Lake.
This walk and crossing will help the students access the High School today, and will help ensure there is a safe location
for students to walk during the construction of Sandy Lake Road. The walk is complete today, and the pedestrian
crossing of Sandy Lake Road should be complete early next week.
Thanks again for bringing your concerns to the city. If there is anything else we can help with, please don't hesitate to

Thank you for your continued interest in this important issue. The city is actively working with the power company in an
effort to relocate their utility poles on the north side of Sandy Lake Road. Once these utility poles are moved, we will
begin the reconstruction of the road. As I indicated in my June email, this reconstruction will bring a permanent
solution to this crossing issue.
I understand your frustration with the pace of this project. A project of this magnitude requires a lot of coordination
to keep it moving forward.
I'm not usually involved in the assignment of crossing guards, but I believe they are usually only assigned within school
zones, and typically for younger children. Let me discuss this request with our traffic division and/or our police
department. I'll get back with you in the next few days to discuss their thoughts on the issue.

Hello, It has been a while and there hasn't been any progress as of lately
on a crosswalk on Sandy Lake. I am very disappointed.... is there any way
you can put a person to stop traffic for kids during the time kids are
walking to school until the crosswalk is completed?

My name is Keith Marvin, and I am the project engineer for the Sandy Lake
Road improvement project. The City Manager's Office forwarded me your email
and asked me to contact you about this important issue.
We agree with you that the pedestrian crossing of Sandy Lake between
Whispering Hills and Oak Trail is not as safe as it could be. One of the
goals of the Sandy Lake Road project is to rectify this situation. Along
those lines we will be constructing a full signal light with this project,
including pedestrian push buttons and signals, marked crosswalks, and ADA
accessible sidewalks on both sides of Sandy Lake Road.
The early stages of this project have already started. Tree removal and
utility relocations are underway. The construction of the road improvements
are slated to begin during the first quarter of 2012, and the project is
expected to last approximately 12 months.

Hello,
My name is Marilyn Strauss and I live at 145 Whispering Hills Dr. in
Coppell. My son is starting high school next year. I believe he is in
walking distance as I see several kids walking home. I know a couple years
ago there was a teen killed crossing the street on Denton Tap and some major
work was done to keep the kids from crossing in other places than the cross
walk. My concern is the kids crossing Sandy Lake where there is NO
CROSSWALK. I bet at least 25 kids walk home in the direction of Whispering
Hills, which is a major street into housing developments there. I see kids
trying to cross the street and because there is no crosswalk, I truly
believe they are in danger of getting hit. Do we have to wait until one
gets hit before you do something about it? Or is there some process that
can be started to petition for a cross walk? The city had a light put in
there in the last few years, but no crosswalk.
