Mr. Garza,
Compacting the subgrade and adding 2 inches of concrete in lieu of performing lime-stabilization is as good as or better
than the designed pavement section that included lime-stabilization. We concur that lime-stabilization should not be
performed at that subdivision and we concur with the alternative pavement section being recommended.

Subject: Sulfates opinion
Perry,
Thanks for having us out last week, I think our guys really enjoyed the tour. I would like your opinion on subgrade prep
containing sulfates. We have a private subdivision that is being constructed in town and they ran into sulfates ranging
from 4000 Mg/Kg to 7500 Mg/Kg, their geotech recommends scarifying 6” and compacting to 95 percent and then
adding an extra 2” of concrete. Would you agree that this would be sufficient for residential pavement?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael Garza, P.E.
